April 30, 2021 - 3 days in Napa: Arkenstone, Memento Mori, Maxem, The French Laundry, Christopher Tynan, Kinsman, Harlan, Vice Versa, Accendo, Fairchild, Macdonald, and a truckload of others (Napa): A barrel sample. Open your arms up super wide because here comes a big slathery fruit hug that might initially suffocate the senses with its wrap-around Lennie Smalls-like power. But without worry should be you young Jedi, because the grip backs off just in time to let the floodgates open right up for a barrage of massive black fruit, freshly turned black earth, and black oak char. Did I mention black? Super dark and concentrated, the Vangone barrel sample expectations are met and exceeded here. I’ve frankly found that Vangone from barrel never, ever disappoints. They are just sooooo striking.

If you’re looking for red fruit and tobacco leaf, best wander down the street to Clos du Val with your bachelorette bus and enjoy it with a cheeseboard or something. If you’re a cave dweller like me, get on the Vangone party train and spelunk your way into these intense black berried beauties. 96-97+ points.

April 22, 2021 - Barrel sample. After the Memento Mori and Arkenstone samples that were so up front and ready to drink, this monster crashed the party. You won't mistake this for the other wines anytime soon. Super tight with a wall of tannins I'm not used to getting from a barrel sample. That could be because while we are all drinking 2018 already, this baby is still sitting in the barrel! And of course, 2018 is a very serious cooler vintage and doesn't show its cards like 2019 has been so far. Anyway, this is black fruited, filled with dense earthy flavors and finishes with huge minerality. It'll take a while to truly see what this will become. I've found Vangone to be a bit fickle in bottle. Sometimes it's rocking, and other times it's meh. Could just need age. This one is 94-96 in my book.

February 8, 2019 - Sam Kaplan - Arkenstone, Mememto Mori, Maxem, Vangone: Barrel sample. Dark and dense, rich and concentrated, this Vangone is a stellar example of a decidedly monstrous fruit core encompassed by a formidable but amazingly flavorful robe of sweet tannins. Powerfully voluptuous without being chubby or sluggish. Quality juice to be sure, flaunting blackberry, black raspberry, bitter chocolate, and some faint dust notes.

Mid-palate weight and concentration are most notable, as is the overall intensity. The kinship between this 2018 and the 2016 version is striking, which is an absolutely great thing, instilling confidence in the notion that 2018 will ultimately produce a captivatingly elevated wine a few years from now (slated to spend 3 years in barrel). I suspect that this wine will follow along a similar pathway as its two-year-older brother. A brand to definitely follow. 97-99+ point potential here.

February 8, 2019 - Barrel sample. Similar to my impressions of the 2016 barrel sample, although obviously much younger with significantly more parts to come together over time. This is a staggeringly rich, concentrated, layered and expressive wine. The fruit is dense and dark, totally round and shows a great flavor profile already. It will be one not to miss when it is released. 2018 is looking pretty similar to 2016, which is great news. 96-99
