October 29, 2021 - At the Memento Mori tasting room, hosted by Genevieve. Playing things a bit closer to the vest than the 2019 at present, but with coaxing, notes of currants, cassis, and earth emerge. Firm but ripe tannins, structured and deep, with a sense of expansiveness on the mid palate; good balance and delineation on the long finish. This should be absolutely singing in 2025!

August 20, 2021 - Nose: [57°-62°+] A fog-like haze of graphite drifts across an earthy forest floor with moss, tree bark and branches, buried deep red fruits with some dark blue fruits and some damp stones. A bit of chocolate notes with lots of time.

Palate: [57°-62°+] Everything mentioned on the nose can be found on the palate but with a slightly different profile than the nose; more emphasis on the graphite, tree bark, heavily steeped tea (assuming that is the VHR punching through) and a soft aura of dark fruits with the addition of whole pomegranates. A bit of a heat flare on the finish.

Attributes: Dark ruby. Dry with medium-plus amounts of strong, chewy tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with medium to medium-plus acidity. Good finish of at least 16-18 seconds.

Thoughts: So different from the last two times I had it but it has been almost a year (~3 months shy). Lots of flavors but they seem to be fighting for the spotlight and not really working together. I'm not sure is it because I know this is a blend of all the sites but the VHR really seems to stand out above the rest. Even with a long decant of at least 6+ hours, it seems like it can not do the same trick that time can. Strong mineral and tannin are overpowering still and my best guess is 4-5 years should do the trick. I'm hoping by then all the flavors should come together in harmony. This is a strong 96 with room for another point or two with time.

Other notes: Bordeaux glass. Emptied bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~55° for 4 hours before serving, continued to decant while consumed over another 4.5 hours (total 8.5hrs). Recommend serving ~56°-64° and decant for 6-8 hours at cellar temp if opening now.

June 14, 2021 - 2021 Napa - June 9-12: This will absolutely be better than the 2014 but it it ain’t there yet. Similar notes to the 2014, red fruit, bay leaf, herbal tones, but this seems to flow effortlessly across the palate. This was really good, Mrs Geaux’s favorite. I will take one for a spin soon. Room to run into high 90s in 7+ years.
