October 10, 2020 - Bumping this up after finishing the rest of the previously coravined bottle. One of the best 2017s from Napa that I’ve had so far.

July 31, 2020 - This wine reminds me of the final scene in Gladiator when Juba is burying the figurine in the dirt at the Coliseum. He’s talking to Maximus and says “I will see you again some day, but not yet, not yet”.

This wine will be glorious some day, but not yet, not yet.

After taking Sam Kaplan’s advice to decant for a 1/2 hour and then follow it along, this wine upon initial sips left a little to be desired. The mid palate seemed a bit flabby to me. But as the night wore on, it developed fullness and that quintessential unique VHR nose began to emerge.

95 for now with clear upside. If opening now, give it a solid 2 hour decant, or better yet wait 3-5 years.

One other thing- does anyone else want to jump through the TV and choke out Commodus whenever he was on screen? Damn, I would strangle that little b$tch.

May 18, 2020 - What can I say? incredible bottle. Decanted for almost 4hrs. Aromas were jumping out of the glass. Black fruit, licorice, orange peel hints even. Smooth and well rounded, with a hint of minerality. Long finish. Exquisite. Wish I would have bought more. Will get even better with a few more years. Incredible what Sam Kaplan was able to make with this vintage. Bravo!

February 18, 2020 - There is magic in this world - or at least in the early drinking stages of the 2017 vintage in Napa! This is a real-deal, knock-out, delicious, and complex wine. I was not enamored with the Memento Mori 2017 blend when I tasted it three months ago, but I am enamored with this single vineyard; earthy, ripe, layered, it is a spectacular wine - in this or any year.

Dark purple, almost impenetrably black in color and medium in body, the wine's aromas pull you in and give the first real signal that this is special: ranging from the sweet (e.g., black cherry, boysenberry) to the savory (e.g., fresh leather, sautéed mushroom) to the earthy (graphite, cardamon), it's a wine that I could smell all day.

The flavors are still sorting themselves out, but this has a depth I haven't tasted in any other 2017 so far (e.g., Carter, Vice Versa, Realm, Bevan). The flavors aren't as intense as a 2013 or as plush as a 2016, but they are compelling, even if they operate at a slightly higher register (i.e., more red fruit). Tonight, this offered dense notes of blueberry tart, raspberry, gravel, cedar, and anise, with a finish that starts silky but gets more tannic and dusty after two hours of air. Just singing on the second day, with a more muted nose but incredible integration and a more silky finish. 15.3% alcohol.

I'm planning to wait to open another one until 2021 or later, but this wine clearly has the stuffing and structure to improve with age. I have no idea (yet) how this compares to the Crane or LPV selections from 2017, but the VHR is a promising and welcome newcomer to the MM portfolio. 95-96 for now, with upside in a year or two.

June 10, 2019 - Tasted from barrel (final blend). This will be bottled shortly. First year from this vineyard for MM, and it certainly has the makings of a winner.

In comparison with the 17 Crane, this came across darker, with more chocolate and really dusty tannins. It's LPV-like, but isn't showing quite as much dense minerality. There's huge black core of fruit that is nicely ripe, with a seamless mouthfeel and really fine tannins. This should turn out to be a very nice entry into VHR for MM, especially given the tough vintage. 94-96
