Community Tasting Notes 5

March 20, 2022 - Out of a Riedel Grand Cru Burgundy stem. Light straw, very young appearing. Nose is a bit shy- it takes some rooting around to pull out complex aromas of various citrus fruits, stone dust, a touch of creaminess, interesting notes of rosemary, and even a bit of kelp (kombu).

What a fascinating palate. The texture its full, there is a viscosity and almost an oiliness that reminds of a N Rhone white, but with a flavor profile and acid level of a Chablis. Very lemony and chalky, super focused with screaming high acid. I’m assuming the minerality/chalkiness comes from the limestone and fossil-laden soils these vines are grown in (the “White Bones”). But again, there is that very pleasant mouthcoating thickness (glycerol?) that is totally unexpected and not anything like you would encounter in Chablis. Fascinating!

Interesting that the CellarTracker reviews are not nearly as enthusiastic as the super high scores given by critics (even with Suckling’s usual grade inflation he gave an impressive 99, Parker gave 96). I’m somewhere in the middle. The wine is beautiful, impressively made, clearly going to last at least 10 years longer, probably more. But to me, what makes it special, is the fusion of two unexpected and disparate elements- the texture of N Rhone with the flavors of Chablis. Where else are you going to get something like this?

Tip: the thick texture was accentuated with air. Decant for an hour at least to get the full experience.

March 18, 2022 - Medium lemon, dry, high acidity, high alcohol, very fruity and fatty on palate, clean and simple, probably needs ageing for complexity

August 17, 2021 - I wanted more from this wine, but it remained linear the entire night. Oyster shell, saline and olive brine. Crisp acid but lacked longevity on the palate.

June 5, 2020 - This wine opens up on the nose with an intense rosemary olive oil character, mint, white flowers, just the lightest touch of smoke, and a hugely stony mineral influence. It's rounded on the palate but with an ethereal weightlessness. Focused, with really lovely acidity (3.18 pH apparently!) - everything in the mouth is like an essence or oil, as if you had taken citrus peels and flowers, made them all into a perfume, and infused the wine with it. This wine is maybe even a little emotionally distant but what it lacks in generosity and immediate pleasure it makes up for in the sensory experience it offers. Beguiling.

March 1, 2020 - Citrus, white pear, apple, and alot of delicious minerals from the fossilized animal bones found among the limestone. I did not pick up on any oak notes as many have. Will only improve with some more years.
