    January 28, 2023 - Napa or Rioja? Good but…

Rich nose of black cherry, violets, cinnamon, mocha and slightly dusty.

Really rich palate of black cherry, blackberries, plum with the dark chocolate and cinnamon. Some red fruit hitches a lift from the wave of acidity on the back palate. The acid wave is a welcome counterbalance to the fruit and oak.

Lots of good things to like about this wine and it tastes far younger than it’s 17 years. But…I wouldn’t have picked it as Rioja. Along with the American oak it has Napa sensibilities of really rich oak Laden fruit, which I’m personally not a huge fan of. What sets this apart from the Napa fruit behemoths is the perky acidity but I’ve marked it down a point as it lacks typicity.

So if you’re a Napa fan dive in. Others YMMV.

January 13, 2023 - Well known modern Rioja producer who left Rioja DO in pursuit to showcase its location and terroir rather than levels of maturation. Made from Tempranillo planted in 1945, aged for 18 months in new FR oak. Deep garnet red colour. Medium intensity aroma of dried cherries and cranberries, leather, tobacco, dried roses. Medium body, soft and elegant texture with dry mouthfeel, saline notes, concludes with velvety tannins. Slightly missed the complexity and depth of flavour.

December 3, 2022 - Great aged Rioja: fig, plum, tobacco leaf, black cherry, dried prune, dark chocolate, blackcurrant, cigar box, medium plus body, smooth long black fruit dominant finish.

February 4, 2022 - Excellent wine. Needs decanting for about 45 minutes. Enjoyed on a date night at Little Mama’s in Charlotte.
