September 29, 2023 - A rather distinct nose of complex spiciness on the forefront and behind it markedly dark cherry driven fruit, earth, toasty oak and some minerally tones. There is something musty about it but I cannot see it being faulty in any way. On the palate it is on the richer side with some muscles to its frame. Despite being from the generally fresh 2017 vintage and carrying a modest 13% ABV it is somewhat heady yet on the savory side still with a saline quality to it. The recent CT note mentioned VA but I’m not getting any. Despite the hairy chest masculine style there is a streak of freshness running through it, rendering it very enjoyable. This is not an elegant, refined Pinot Noir by any means and it is a bit too robust to offer grand enjoyment on its own but with appropriate fair it is a great tipple that could work as a gateway drug for Rhône drinkers. While that may sound like damning with a faint praise I am actually happy with what’s in the bottle.

September 26, 2023 - Popped and poured; enjoyed with cedar plank salmon. The 2017 Hubert Lignier "Grand Chaliot" is about as representative of 2017 Pinot Noir from Burgundy as I can think of. Upon release, these showed pretty well, considering...but in just a few years, time has caught up to it. It's high toned, light, thin, green and overall recalcitrant. Structure is kinda there...though the acid seems a little out of balance (high). Quite a bit more VA than I would have expected from Lignier so this could be an off bottle but...nothing jumped out as being especially "wrong". It was just...hard to really love which is so unusual for this producer. A decent pairing with the salmon but would have been much better if it had been a more typical "Grand Chaliot". If you have any of these laying around, I would drink soon.

February 16, 2020 - Good stuff from a favorite producer. Nice weight, color and palate. Seems that 2017 is a real nice Burgundy vintage.

January 31, 2020 - Very young and tight, serious matter, dark red fruit. Upright, focused, good acidity. Wait a few years for next hit.
