July 16, 2019 - Dark brownish red in color, which doesn't bode well for this particular bottle. Definitely not on par with the last bottle of this I opened...this shows darker, stewed flavors of prune and raisin and is clearly oxidized and advanced. Drinkable but not what it should be. Ah, the variability of G Mascarello...when they're good, they're fantastic, but it is hard to reconcile the crazy prices nowadays with this lack of consistency.

May 13, 2019 - Rose petal, dark cherries, candies, tar, and red fruiting the nose. Well integrated, yet drying tannins with sweet cherries, dark berries, blood orange, and good acidity on the palate. Long finish. This is pretty mature and is drinking super well right now. What a gorgeous wine. 95+

February 7, 2019 - This was certainly a good bottle of this but it remains high in acidity and rather harsh on the finish even with food. There is gorgeous fruit underneath with delicious dark cherry and licorice flavors with lovely notes of forest floor and tar. The finish is monumental but I can't really say it was enjoyable to drink at this point. Perhaps another 50 years?

November 17, 2018 - So much better than a bottle tasted back in February. This was opened about 24 hours in advance, which likely helped. A complete Nebbiolo with everything you'd want. Lots of power and still youthful, but so good with food.

November 17, 2018 - Nebbiolos, white truffles, Volume III (Chicago, IL): #8570. Opened the night before, and decanted a few hours before service. Initially, when I opened it, this tasted a little watery and thin, and in fact never really put on weight until I left this in the decanter. While I tend to think of Monprivato as a delicate and pretty example of Barolo, this bottle also exemplifies the vintage by showing more black fruited characteristics. However, the delicacy is still on full display, and a touch of sweetness balances out the large-scaled structure. Incredible stuff and very much in my wheelhouse.

Rockss and Fruit

(Giuseppe Mascarello Monprivato) This was tight and closed. Clenching tannins on the first sip and a touch medicinal on the nose. The tannins gave way to lots of fruit but still were prominent. The fruit was dense and structured. Very '96. Never really came around but I did not give it the proper amount of time. Check back in 10 years. The most closed '96 I have had recently.
