October 14, 2021 - Deep dark ruby, tons of extraction that stains the glass on every swirl. On the nose, notes of black cherry, black currant, and black plum. Significant oak influence as revealed by the vanilla and coconut flavors. On day 2, hints of herbs and baking spices appeared. Can't help but noticing that the 15.2% ABV is a little bit out of balance, as there was an obvious touch of heat on the finish. Still, the high acidity and approachable tannins after a one-hour decant made it a very juicy wine.

September 22, 2021 - ok this is very nice. Purple/opaque. I’m liking it as it’s opened up in 3 hours. A bit more red fruited than I thought. Not as massive as I thought. It’s easy drinking, pure and plush fruits but held together nicely. Cherry jam, raspberries, blackberries and plums. Hints of wet road, pebbles, spices, soft ripe tannins. I’m would like to taste the ‘16 and the ‘18. Cheers 🍷

September 18, 2021 - Surprisingly both bottles had a bunch of sediment. A good overall crowd pleasing wine. Darker fruits and good complexity.

September 13, 2021 - A nice bottle but even at a discount QPR not there. Concentration and nice dark fruit, but complexity was lacking, despite decant and saving a glass for day 2.

September 11, 2021 - 30 min double decant. Deep dark magenta color. Raspberry jam, blackberry, burnt cinnamon toast, anise, and subtle wisteria on the nose. Dry, satiny, full bodied palate. Firm, full, low intensity tannins on the medium long finish.

This was very good right out of the gate, but began fading after an hour of drinking. It’s got the typical red-fruited nose of the ‘17 vintage. Thoroughly enjoyable nonetheless, but doesn’t hold a candle to the ‘16 IMHO.

August 17, 2021 - Very good, spot on with the winemakers notes. Seemed a touch more cab franc than stated in blend notes. Bottom line red and dark blue fruits, hints of violet and blueberry was rich and sappy almost like syrup or pie. This was not in you face but part of a complex balance of oak, spice, vanilla, still my palate and mind kept finding it nicely mingling on supportive acid and tannins Structure was nice. I shook my head every time trying to figure out what it reminded me of, I stopped that and just enjoyed. If it comes to me I know it will be a much more expensive and mature wine.

May 11, 2021 - Not my normal formal notes as I had this initially in a more social setting and am revisiting it now, on night 3. Initially tasted on a pop and pour and it was showing well immediately.

This wine has a really great texture and wonderful tannins. Full body and very concentrated. Big dark fruit, huge graphite, and strong oak imparted flavors. Moderate or so acidity that's sufficient, but I wouldn't mind just a bit more brightness. The wine is currently very primary and pretty linear -- I don't think it gives you too much to think about, and I wouldn't mind some more complexity. Maybe it'll gain a bit of complexity with some age. This is a great wine, especially in terms of mouthfeel, but I think some added complexity, finesse, a touch of acidity, and maybe a bit more integration of the oak would make me even more eager to come back for more.

While it's not really a fair comparison, a 2016 Maybach Materium we opened (pop and pour) along side this pretty much blew this wine away and showed that there're levels to this. Relative to the Ontogeny, the Materium showed how much finesse can really elevate a wine. Once again, it's not necessarily a fair comparison, but it's the comparison I had available at the time.

May 4, 2021 - (5/5) - I feel like the color has almost gotten better. Deep violet/ruby that stains the glass
(13/15) - Aromas still very primary and pleasant. dark fruits, baking spices, vanilla, cinnamon. This remains the highlight of this wine for me.
(17/20) - A massive wine. Opulent, lush, hedonistic are the descriptors that come to mind time and again. Gorgeous fruit and spice, a touch heavy feeling on the palate lacking maybe just a bit of acidity, finishing with what seems like a classic Bevan PV graphite streak at the end for ontogeny.
(8/10) - Very good, especially for the vintage. Nothing to overlook here. You're getting exactly what you hoped. A Massive Bevan wine.
