May 25, 2020 - Ekigaina, as I find out, is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and Tannat developed in France by INRA in 1955. The winery has planted a peculiar selection of international varieties back in 2006, namely Corinto, Sangiovese, Marselan, Syrah, Rebo, Petit Verdot, Montepulciano, Tannat and Ekigaina.
2011 is one of the early vintages of the Mahrem label and this wine in particular bears the traces of the prevalent style back then. Still quite dense and tight, the nose reveals dried black berries along with earthy undertones and spice. The tannins, though not overpowering are thick and mouth-coating. The finish is quite warm with a citrusy tang on the aftertaste.
