April 22, 2024 - Deep golden color. Pronounced nose with honey, flowers, kumquat, marzipan, ripe golden apple, and a saline finish.
The palate is just as nice with a smooth and medium+ finish. Very creamy.

April 10, 2024 - I'm partial to Egly. My go to when I can. This one is 100% P Meunier and it sings. Vinous, mineral, complex.

April 4, 2024 - Home-drinking - Disg July 2017 so 2013 base I figure. Feels more primary and less evolved than the 16 disgorgement I had recently. Yeasty nose and telltale praline flavour if Egly wines. Lots of primary Pinot Meunier goodness and drive that fills the palate spherical. It is a wine that can age quite gracefully. The Vrigny is undervalued in the Egly stable. It provides the Egly magic with age and is the only take of the master on 100% Meunier.

This 100% Pinot Meunier champagne is absolutely enchanting. It's a departure from the ordinary, offering a delightful medley of chalky nuances, rich yeastiness, toasty hints, and a touch of bruised apple. With every sip, it feels like stepping into a bakery, a truly joyful experience. It's both playful and captivating, inviting everyone to experience its unique charm. While it may not suit everyone's taste, it's well worth exploring.

March 2, 2024 - Charity wine pairings to benefit Whatcom Hospice House. (Samish Hill, Bellingham, WA): Another great bottle of E-O VdV. Richly hued with a pale apricot color. Lush on the palate but good grip. On the nose a palate, slight yeasty apricot, which I always find in the wine. Maybe it’s the power of suggestion of its color, but I think not. A faint almond nuttiness, tangerine.

February 20, 2024 - Often Imitated, Rarely Duplicated

Many Champagne producers rarely use 100% Pinot Meunier for their sparkling wines. Occasionally as an addition, but not for the whole shebang. I discovered today’s wine some time ago and was blown over by everything about the wine, so I decided it was time to revisit this sparkler and see what 5 or so years might have done for it.

Domaine Egly-Ouriet Premier Cru Brut ‘Les Vignes de Vrigny’ NV

From the heart of Ambonnay, this wine comes from a 40-year-old estate and organically farmed vineyards (just under 5 acres) that were exclusively planted to Pinot Meunier. Hand-harvested and fermented on indigenous yeast in stainless steel tanks, it is then aged in the bottle for 3 years. A light dosage is added and is bottled unfined and unfiltered.

As a Champagne connoisseur (self-proclaimed), the flavors tend to be somewhat unique, approaching a Rosé. Those brioche notes so common are then intermixed with apple and very soft red fruit, finishing with a brightness that lasts throughout.

The quality of this Champagne shows its pedigree; that of a true Récoltant Manipulant (RM); this code is reserved for winemakers that make wine exclusively from grapes they grow themselves, commonly called Champagne de Vigneron or having seen the phrase farmer fizz used by some. Whatever you call it, it’s excellent and be on the lookout.

    Cheers

February 18, 2024 - Peach in color, very fine bubbles, broad but not overly full, balanced, long finish. Hints of butter and bread, a touch of nuttiness. Really good.
