August 28, 2022 - Still beautiful. Bottle in great shape Neck level fill. Great color. The nose is a 99. Smoke and herbs. Iron and cherry. Palate has lift, balance, a density of fruit that is evident in the mouth. Fabulous

September 7, 2019 - From an amazing looking bottle with a fill into the neck, this wine had a deep red center and puce rims. The medium+ intensity nose put forth black spices, roses, fennel, black cherries, and minerals. It developed some honey notes.

In the mouth, this wine was structured with rounded tannin and crisp acidity underneath ripe fruit. As this wine aired it first became more tannic and then less tannin. Finally, after 5 hours it came into an attractive balance. It had a ton of fruit hiding the structure and one could be easily fooled into guessing a high-end (masculine) Burgundy.

This wine is at its peak. However, it will certainly last 10 or 20 years. Worth a special search.

May 22, 2017 - Drank next to the 71 Giacomo Conterno barolo riserva.
This Giacosa was nearly the best wine I have ever had from Bruno, with the exception of the 1971 Giacosa Barolo Collina Rionda.
Everything you want in aged barolo and a surprising remaining core of fruit. Deep and long. Reminded me of the 1989 Giacosa SSR barbaresco.
The Conterno was wonderful also, but slightly outdone by the bigger Giacosa on this night.
On another night the results could be opposite.
With old wines, it is all about storage and I got lucky here.
I am reminded of the old adage, "there are no great old wines, only great bottles".
I have several more of these and I hope this performance can be repeated.
71 piedmont wines are my gold standard.

February 4, 2017 - 1971 Piemonte Dinner (Marcel's, Washington, D.C.): Light with tawny tones. Fragrant, perfumed, manageable VA. With time, delicate, wonderfully sweet, great acidity and soil. Beautiful feel, great breed, achieves harmony as it opens. Peak drinking now.

November 10, 2013 - Amazing. The best bottle of this wine I've tasted. Amazing structure and aroma, sweet fruit, spice and leather, smoke and pepper. Fabulous. Long, long finish.
