January 31, 2023 - 2017 Domaine Michelas Saint Jemms Cornas Les Murettes was gamey and mineral-laced. The developing Syrah was clear and medium ruby in colour without any noticeable sediments. Varietal notes of smoked game, black olives and black pepper jumped out of the glass. Upon swirling, aromas of blackberry, blueberry, lavender and thyme herbs emerged.
The mouthfeel was dry and full-bodied, with a medium level of acidity and a high level of chewy tannin. Consistent flavours of forest berries, crushed violets and liquorice transitioned to wet stones minerals and Ceylon tea in a long smoky finish. The 13.5% alcohol was well-integrated. The empty bottle weighed 587 grams.
The wines of Cornas were probably stigmatised as unforgiving tannic beast in youth. To my surprise, this bottle was already quite approachable at this stage. I am eternally grateful to the winemakers who go easy on drinkers who regularly commit infanticide. -
