February 3, 2020 - Came across some bottles in the secondary market that I’m thinking about buying but wanted to revisit first - big improvement from a couple months ago. Primarily black fruit with a touch of red - blackberry, black currants, and a little dark cherry. Really smooth, a nice purity, and really nice depth/concentration. Nice vibrant flavors of dark berries, some spice/licorice, and a little mineral/graphite component. Solid finish but not overly long nor deep - it could use some more time to open-up/fanout with the finish. Popped/poured but drank out of a decanter for a couple hours. Improved a little with time. Enjoyable at this stage but once again I believe another 6 months or so should be beneficial to let it soften/open-up a little more. Nonetheless, a great vintage of this wine - probably my favorite that I’ve had so far. In my opinion, in line with the 95 rating from Dunnuck even at this stage and a miss from LPB of WA with her 89 rating. 100% cab.

December 14, 2019 - Dark ruby fruit - blackberry, currants/cassis, and dark cherry. Smooth mid-palate with a nice purity and solid depth/concentration - medium plus body. Nice vibrant/rich flavors of dark berries, some spice box/licorice, and cassis - a ton of cassis. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep - I believe it could use some more time to open-up on the back-end which isn’t a surprise in light of its youth. Decanted for one hour and drank over a couple more. Improved a little with time. In my opinion the prominent cassis profile is a little over the top and needs some time to settle down. Nonetheless, a nice vintage of this wine. I’m going to lay my remaining bottles down for 6 months to let it soften/integrate further. 100% cab.

August 24, 2019 - Mike Smith 2018s & 2017s - Myriad, Quivet, Scarlett, Becklyn, and others (Saint Helena): The 2017 Quivet Kenefick and Pellet samples tasted identical to me in their current states. Some sweet vanilla and strawberry cream elements encircle the red cherry core, with hints of spice barely hitting the far reaches of the back end. Finishes with a little alcohol and candied red fruit. As with many of the 2017s, there is a fruitiness that simply needs a few years for these wines to develop-through to best offer more complex and nuanced components that are waiting in the background. Certain potential with all of these wines. Give them time in bottle. Drink your 2014s for now and allow these 2017s some “me” time for a number of years. Short term (2-3+ years) is a must in my opinion.
