Community Tasting Notes 4

March 3, 2021 - Bought at the CD on release and cellared since.

Pop and pour. Drunk over a couple hours.

Cedar and more wood notes on the nose at first. With some air, cassis, olive, stone fruit and leafiness develop. The palate is a step up form the nose. Beautifully textured, supple with the tannins for the most part resolved. It's sappy and broad on the palate with out being heavy. The wood is present, but less overt on the palate. More cassis, stone fruits, some bitter chocolate, olive, and savory umami notes. Texturally, this is quite nice with good lift, nice savory leafiness. and acid balance. For me though the wood distracts, albeit less on the palate than the nose. Still quite good and very enjoyable. Drinking at late peak for me. Blindm I would have called this a modern leaning Right Bank wine.

Disclaimer, I do to enjoy noticeable wood in wine and if you don't mind it, you would enjoy it more, and this would be a lovely, mature, savory wine.

July 6, 2020 - Oh dear, good colour, good cork but this smells of stinky greens and gunpowder.

Tastes like a rich silverbeet (or similar greens) stew.

Not an Awatea that I should have cellared 🙁

May 18, 2010 - Superb wine. Let me just say up front that a few of my unlucky "lesser wines" (or so I thought) spent a few months in a secondary storage area that was a bit warm, while I waited for additional rack space in the real cellar. This bottle was one of those, and so had aged a more quickly than it would have. That said, I know that my tasting probably picks up a different quality, but yet I was still extremely happy with it, even though it had certain Madeira-like qualities.

On the nose, deep, intense, syrupy molasses - with vanilla and cherry concentrates. In the mouth, chocolate with strawberries. Slightly earthy, but rich. A reasonably long finish, ending with soft tannins and graphite/charcoal.

I can only imagine how nice this would have been if I hadn't treated it so badly. Would love to find more bottles of this wine to replace this one.
