October 14, 2015 - Delicious, drinking perfectly and would still even go another year or three - medium to medium deep ruby, great nose, earthy, cherry, has personality - palate is nice too - cherry, spice - but generally, just winey in a great S Rhone way - really enjoyed this.

December 19, 2013 - Deep ruby color. Aromas of sweet dark fruit and mocha. Full bodied on the palate with good focused dark cherry essence through the middle, falls off a little on the end, with some heat. 15% abv.

January 13, 2012 - simple wine...alcohol was more elevated that I prefer. decent structure and size just too new world in style for me

December 17, 2010 - Fantastic. More alcohol than I usually favor, but I didn't notice that until I looked at the label.
Soft tannins, nice acidity with food, lots of fruit (plum?) without being a fruit bomb.

  • sadofsky wrote: flawed

December 17, 2010 - Corked. Though what seemed like an almost nice wine poking out from underneath.

    (Le Ponce ESCARAVAILLES) Friday SPECIAL

    Dear Friends,

Here’s a buying opportunity but it’s not one I’m happy about. Most purveyors would be happy to pass on a cut-rate deal like this but not me - I’m doing it because the wine deserves it.

Nothing frustrates me more as a wine lover than a perfectly good beverage being dumped because of one barrel review - this is a joke folks (it’s not even a finished bottle score) and its impacting the livelihood of the farmers and winemaker that crafted it just because the vaunted “90” doesn’t appear in the score range. Why is this the case? Americans see themselves as free-thinking individuals that do not follow the crowd like lemmings but that is not the reality with most US wine buyers. This is not a new topic - it’s the score (and price) that usually matters in the end.

Escaravailles’s Rasteau “Le Ponce” has become one of our most consistent wines over the years but it has crept up in price, well above the acceptable Cote du Rhone range as they consider it in the same qualitative league as Saumade’s Confiance. If you ask the winery, they believe the 2005 is better than the 2003 and 2004 (both WA90) so they just don’t understand why demand isn’t stronger for the 2005? It’s not the easiest thing to tell a winery that an entire country relies on one single barrel review but that’s what had to be done.

Named the “bug juice” because of the large bug print on the front label, the 2005 is a serious wine - full of grip, intensity and all the elements that make the Southern Rhone so loved by a wide audience. Keep in mind, this is not a lazy, feminine example - this is about brute strength and structure with alcohol to match. It needs another year or two in bottle but it should prove to be at least as good as the two preceding vintages. Give the 2005 the patience it deserves and you could be sitting on quite a bargain.

This parcel is directly from the winery cellar with perfect provenance

ONE SHIPMENT ONLY at this price:

2005 Domaine Escaravailles Rasteau “Le Ponce” (bug juice) (WA87-89)

    Thank you,
