Community Tasting Notes 3

September 23, 2021 - The grapes are sourced from lieu-dit "Les Pargues", a parcel located in the valley between 1er Crus Montmains and Vaillons, historically considered a top-level vineyard. Pieuze treats the wine like a 1er Cru or Grand Cru. Fermented spontaneously, aged in old, neutral oak barrels. 13% alcohol.

Youthful, medium-deep whitish-green color. Somewhat restrained, but also quite fine-tuned nose with light aromas of apricots, some red apple, light stony mineral nuances, a little bit of savory spice and a floral hint of orchard flowers. Although the nose doesn't jump at you from the glass, it still holds wonderfully seductive overall quality to it. The wine feels broad, ripe and moderately full-bodied on the palate with a surprisingly rich taste, compared to the slightly reticent nose. Flavors of juicy citrus fruits, some spicy red apple tones, a little bit of honeydew melon, light steely mineral notes, a classic Chablis hint of crushed oyster shells and a touch of tangy salinity. The moderately high acidity lends good sense of balance to the wine. The rich finish is juicy, broad and quite somewhat round with pretty long flavors of ripe Golden Delicious apple, some white peach, light honeydew melon notes, a little bit of steely minerality, light saline nuances and a spicy hint of savory old wood.

Although the nose felt somewhat restrained, the wine was anything but on the palate, and the solar 2018 vintage shows. However, true to Piuze's style, the wine never comes across as too rich, soft or fruity, even though there's some roundness and it has a slightly sweet edge to the fruit. A fine effort for the warm vintage, but perhaps still lacking a bit verve and zip. Enjoyable now and - based on the very youthful nature of the wine - will get better with age, but I can't help but think that this must be a terrific wine in cooler vintages.

June 18, 2020 - Drank over past two nites, last nite being our Xtremo weekly tasting. Nose on the reticent side. Citrus (mostly lime), good acidity level, some minerality. Seemed a bit sweet and overly round/oaky to me--as opposed to the more common Chablis austerity. Nothing special here, & not my preferred style of burg. Prob will improve with age but not something I'll be investigating here

May 23, 2020 - Pale gold wine with greenish specks. The nose is quite tight and mineral, but you get hints of green apple and white flowers. Austere palate with a bit of citrus and lemon, specifically. Solid wine but I would wait at least 5 years to enjoy.
