January 8, 2022 - Carafé une heure. Très costaud - beau et complexe certes mais trop jeune, ce qui n’est pas une surprise. J’entrevois un bel avenir à ce vin avec un peu de patience donc la note potentielle est certainement plus élevée.

April 27, 2021 - I want to add this to balance my note on the loathsome 2012 - I want to provide testimony to show I am a true Rostywallah.

Colour is medium red-purple, vibrant and with only a little fading at meniscus. A promising start.

Nose is dominated (for me) by aromas from the Viognier component - but at this age, that is a good thing as it gives lift and some lusciousness to what might otherwise be a rather tight wine. I also get some pepper and spice and roasted meat, a hint of violets and plums. Really exciting. Are they using some whole bunches? If they are, it seems to be working.

Palate is intense and long and pretty taught, yet there is volume that is clearly waiting for time to pounce. Tannins are fine and ripe and although not lacking they aren't out of balance, or aggressive. there is refreshing acidity but not sourness. This is damned good stuff. If they have used whole bunches there is no stalkiness, nor nasty stem tannins. There is some pleasing slipperiness (from the Viognier?).

This is so much better on day 2, after decanting on day 1 that I have to say that it speaks of a long, long life, but if you open it and decant a day in advance it is very, very drinkable now. Wine for seduction - if they don't go weak at the knees over this you should run a line through their name.

I do feel obliged to say that this is getting to be a pricey proposition in the Antipodes. If you get the chance try this against a cooler year from Clonakilla - the Syrah or, most especially, the Shiraz-Viognier (say 2014, or 2017) would make for a very interesting blind tasting with the Rosty. The CK is no Barossa plus size model (and oh, how we love them both) and the texture and acid are strikingly akin to the Northern Rhone. More Annette than Stormy. Beat me daddy, eight to the bar.

March 7, 2020 - One of the best wines of the en primeur tasting. Seriously big dark nose, big bodied, tannic, huge length of finish. Top end wine that will need a decade to come around.

November 19, 2019 - [J&B Rhone 2018 tasting] second best wine of the tasting after the rare Cote Brune.
