September 3, 2022 - Willi Schaefer in the afternoon (Tucson, AZ): A maturing honeyed nose of slate, florals, and lovely fruit. Full and expansive on the palate compared with the previous wines of the day, but retaining excellent balance of RS and acid. White flowers, lime, apricot, honey, and all within the main theme of slate. There's clarity and purity like drinking mineral water. Calm and poise. This is maturing faster than I would expect, but I don't mean that as it being tired. It's just peaking already. Another wine that doesn't;t seem to being trying hard to be anything, it just is itself and that is outstanding.

A last glass a week later had softened a touch around the edges, but still maintained its balance and sense of ease. Outstanding, if not profound. 93

February 26, 2021 - Poured into small bottles. Day 2. This strikes me a more advanced than I would like - orange color and has than autumnal and cinnamon note. plus a little ox note as well. some golden apple and cinnamon, maybe some wet leaves and a touch baked. Still good but not where it should be i think.

February 24, 2020 - Dinner at MingHin (Chicago, IL): #09-02, 8% abv. I think the consensus generally has been that Schaefer could have done a little better in 2001, but this bottle bucks that belief. There's a lightness and lift to the fruit that I quite enjoy here, and the 2001 acidity is actually quite prominent here. I've never thought of Schaefer's wines to possess that strong acidic streak, but here it is. Surprisingly resolved and ready to go now.

February 16, 2017 - My bottle. Gentle cinnamon, apple. Still, quiet, apple pie, pear. Great balance - good flavor. Not burning but great apple, cinnamon, baking spices. The finish is golden and long, apple pie. This was a crowd favorite. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20.

November 5, 2016 - Finally decided to crack one of these. It's heartbreakingly beautiful. There is talk of Schaefer underperforming in 2001 and there may be some truth there: this isn't an electric or laser-like bottle of Riesling - just the opposite in fact - it's light, precise, and fleeting. The nose shows vanilla creme, cinnamon, some sweet lime, some apple, peach, minerals. The palate is airy and dances weightless - the purity is off the scale. This is a work in balance and poise. Lovely. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5.5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1.5/2 = 17.5/20
