September 16, 2021 - at winery with Graeme and Alex. 2 hour decant and it was perfect. Pure black fruit amazement. Deep and perfectly balanced. blackberries, cassis, tremendous mouthfeel, long and true finish. This is the real deal.

August 24, 2021 - Tasted at the vineyard with Alex Macdonald. What an experience! Amazing story, walking the vineyards with Alex you saw first hand how unique and special their property is…. Real old school terrior driven approach in the valley… rare to find today. I hope to get off the list one day soon…

The wine itself was beautiful. A balance of very lifted acidity with amazing earth notes from their special terrior. Beautiful balance of black currant and red fruit with well integrated tannins even at this stage. Beautiful balance throughout the pallet and great finish even now! Approachability meets longevity here. Perhaps my favorite wine in the valley right now.

August 24, 2021 - You know when you get sucked into one of those sales pitches from someone at the hotel of a resort and they are offering you the world? I think most of us know the feeling. You get fed all these lines about how great their program is, their customer service, their hospitality, their quality, their amazing location. Then, the presentation is over and someone, somehow is slipped into the picture without you knowing and now they are strongarming you into giving your credit card to commit to them for the rest of your life. Well, Macdonald is none of that! LOL. Alex didn’t need to tell us their wine is great. If he did, then it probably isn’t that great. Macdonald doesn’t need a sales pitch. They do not need an MS on the payroll or consulting. As Alex walked us through the vineyards, I felt the passion for what him and his brother are doing. I feel the pride in their hard work and their sacrifice. The wine business is brutal sometimes. But if you do things right as the Macdonalds have, you don’t need much more...well maybe you just need more wine! LOL. To be in the same category for me as the Harlans of the world and for them to do it in such a relatively short period of time is amazing. Granted, they are working with a site that is just flat out Grand Cru class. But, even the best site in the world can be F’d up. I remember reading or hearing a podcast where a winemaker said his job is not to F it up. Ok, enough of that…the 18’. Even at this stage, the wine has that “it” factor. When you couple their philosophy of winemaking, the story, and the passion of Alex and Graeme, you simply get perfection. I think this needs some time in bottle and like VHR for me, this wine is going to be a 3 digit wine with some time. This wine is so perfectly balanced. All other CT notes are spot on with the wine. I will note the very apparent black olive, savory notes to the wine which stuck out to me. Couple that with the beautiful blue and red fruits and you have wine of the vintage contender no doubt.

July 15, 2021 - Another stellar performance from the 2018 MACDONALD. This is my second time sampling this vintage of what I believe to be an absolutely perfect wine. For me it’s kinda simple: This is one of the best Cabernet Sauvignons coming out of Napa, period. For comparison purposes, I liken the 2018 to a hybrid of 2016 and 2014, with the gorgeous concentration and depth of its two-year-older brother (less a bit of the power and sheer intensity the 2016 possesses) and an instantly alluring expansiveness and pleasure-push found in the 2014.

For more of my droning on about the awesomeness of 2018 MACDONALD, see my lengthy note from 4/30/2021.

June 14, 2021 - 2021 Napa - June 9-12: Decanted but can’t remember how long. Was able to pay attention to this one! Black olives, tapenade, crushed graphite, black cherry. Obviously young and tannic, but another epic wine from the Alex and Graeme. 97 for now, this will rival the 2013 at some point. Hope I can hold onto mine long enough to do a comparison in 10+ years.

This was my wine of the trip!
