March 30, 2020 - very enjoyable. 2 hour aeration/decant. wine was solid purple in the glass with a slightly clear rim. Nose held significant amount of cigar box notes along with classic Bordeaux elements. Wine still had good acidity but well integrated tannins so this should continue to age well. Moderately long finish with classic minerality. Very well done for the vintage.

February 8, 2020 - Fairly approachable, though one hopes more complexity and elegance will emerge in the coming years. On the hedonistic side, with ripe fruit, plenty of spice and graphite, plus a touch of mint I did not expect.

January 26, 2020 - (Opito Bay): Brick red hue, beautiful, stunning nose of cassis and burnt coffee, right from the off. Very vegetal with muted tannins, medium bodied. Lingering finish of coffee and dark (almost bitter) chocolate. In a good drinking window now. Good but not great.
Day 2 and not a lot of evolution. Somewhat softer but still vegetal with a slight bitter, astringent feel.

December 9, 2019 - In the nose heavy, punchy cassis, pepper, leather and meat. Compact, round, pleasant taste, some cherries, weak tannins. Warm tone.

November 8, 2019 - Same as before. Not very complex. Sweet and a bit tannic still.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) Previously tasted, with some improvement, this trend continues here; today the wine shows some deep fruit and nutty oak, with round and flashy character although there is a somewhat austere midpalate. Ripe and grainy tannins, lots of sweet substance and good vigour too. A touch of tobacco in the finish. Could be very good.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) Sweet fruit here, with notes of toffee and spice still showing in this youthful wine, with attractive raspberry, redcurrant and plum fruit. There is good substance on the palate which is even a touch creamy. Round, grippy, not hugely imbued with vigour but more complete than I thought on last tasting. This has potential and I can firm up my previously rather critical and certainly very broad score - a little.

(Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte Pessac-Léognan) Rather a sweetly-scented nose, with ripe fruit alongside notes of cough-candy and aniseed. Full, moderately concentrated, a soft style, with ripe, defined but gentle tannins and moderate acidity. There are some nice components here but overall it lacks the freshness and structure I seek.
