December 26, 2020 - Decanted for an hour. This will not be my typical tasting note rather perspective if you can even call it that.

    A few comments.
    1. Was very curious what a $100 Memento Mori wine would taste like especially because I have never heard of this wine and I am a buyer and a fan of their wines (Dr Crane is one of my favorites)

    2) I am not a fan of the 2017 vintage (much much better than 2011) overall but have found relatively few good wines so far therefore it’s hard to judge the vintage overall (perhaps it’s like a ‘13 that needs more time although that’s more tannin related than I am getting from the ‘17)

    3) Knowing this wine is made by Sam, I had zero reservations it would be low quality rather would it be more of a drink now wine or would it hold and for how long.

Perspective- the wine is of course very well made and feels like a Napa version of a Bordeaux second label like a Petit Cheval or Pavilion Margaux (not that it tastes anything like those but that’s that analogy that popped into my head) and made to drink earlier than it’s bigger brother? In the current state it is higher toned than I prefer and hasn’t filled out (middle still needs to fill in) however it seems like a wine with a bit more time will come in to its own and be really enjoyable.

If I have a chance to drink another bottle I would be curious on what a longer decant would do but ideally hold for 1-2 more years before popping the cork.

November 21, 2020 - One month after the first pour via Coravin.
Still strong black fruit, with some tobacco and whispers of mocha on the nose. The palate remains full of blackberry, spices and a touch of minerality, though the spices have toned down and given way to a slight vanilla finish tonight. Still young, still 95 points, and still very excited to enjoy the rest of my bottles a few years down the line.

November 1, 2020 - Coravin pour with aerator
    Opaque purple in color
Nose of strong black fruit, tobacco, ripe black cherry, and a hint of mocha
The palate is intensely structured, filled with blackberry, slight baking spices, and wet stone. Perhaps a tad of mint on the end.
Velvety smooth tannins, medium to long finish.
Fantastic young, but this should be exceptional with a few years age.

May 9, 2020 - Decanted for 2+ hours. Drank on its own. Powerful full-bodied wine. Strong aromas of black fruit and tobbaco on the nose at the first swirl of the glass. Silky, smooth and crisp feeling on the palate with a medium finish. Could have used an extra hour or so on the decanter. Drank half of the bottle. Will update after tasting the rest tonight. 94+
