Community Tasting Notes 5

November 19, 2023 - Three hour decant. Deep dark electric ruby magenta color. Ripe blackberry, dark raspberry, blueberry pancake with a hint of smoky maple syrup, bay leaf, brownie, and subtle grapefruit rind. Dry, full bodied palate. Firm, full, slightly chewy tannins on the longish finish.

This remains bit dark and brooding, but it’s loosening up. It’s not as Syrah-like as last year. This is truly in it’s drinking window with room to grow.

October 15, 2022 - PNP. Very deep dark purplish magenta color. Spent coffee filter cake, dark fruit, and and fresh ground pepper on the nose. Smooth, dry, full bodied palate. Firm, full tannins on the longish finish. 100% CS

This is young, but drinking great. I drank it too quickly to take good notes. Certainly needs a good decant if drinking now. Enjoyed during a fun tasting with Addax/Elyse owner Josh Peeples.

January 15, 2022 - One hour slow ox. Nearly opaque bull’s blood color. Espresso, oaky chocolate, and cassis on the nose. Smooth, dry palate, with nice acidity. Firm tannins on the longish finish.

My rating is very prospective at this point. This is currently very young and oak dominated.

September 9, 2021 - BLIND REDS - Bordeaux varietals (mostly Napa and BDX) - Over/Under $100: Rich blackberry, bitter chocolate, red and black cherry, and embers, this wine showed upfront modernity and couldn’t be anything other than a VERY recent version of Napa Cabernet. So, the 2018 Addax it is! True to form, the style here is fruit-forward and powerfully ripe. However, I greatly appreciated this wine’s ability to maintain a clean focus and heightened purity of fruit (as big and overt as the fruit was). Finishes with a soft thunder of booze before the fruit takes back the reigns and washes over the back end. Like with all things Bevan, the yum factor is dialed up here. As I’ve said a million times: Just know what you’re getting into here. If you crack open 30-year-old DRC or are sipping on Bordeaux from the 80’s, I certainly hope you wouldn’t expect similar results here. In that vein, I enjoyed this wine and found it to have a good showing given the stylistic umbrella upon which it exists. Retail, the Addax Tench Cabernet Sauvignon is in the $135-150 range, so it was a slight cheat to be put in the sub-$100 category.

June 14, 2021 - 2021 Napa - June 9-12: Oh Tench how I love thee. Red fruit dominated, eastern Oakville at its finest. If you love Tench, this is a no brainer! Room to get better and run up a few points.
