October 24, 2020 - My last Dunn HM from the 80s. Very sad, but I’m going out on a high note. Bursting with fruit. Hints of wood smoke and capsicum. Super fresh, clean, pure and lifted - a word you might not associate with Dunn. I have a love/hate relationship with the Dunn hard wax seal. It’s a pain to chip away at it, but I think it helps to extend the life of these wines. This bottle could go another 10+ years easily.

September 10, 2020 - I'll give this bottle, the third I've enjoyed in the last two years, a 96. The prior two, I'd have rated even higher because their three decades of funk rocked the known universe the nights I drank them. (Did you notice the disturbances in the Force those evenings?) This bottle was surprisingly smooth and elegant. I've yet to open a bottle of 25+ year Dunn that was less than great. I'll never understand why people bought these on release, cellared them for decades, and then sold them to me to enjoy. But glad they did!

September 10, 2020 - The cork broke to pieces when I opened it, but the wine was in good shape. Smells like leather, cigars, and campfire, but there’s also attractive scents of violets and wet stones. On the palate, I get dried plums, raspberry, black currants, wild strawberries along with coffee, woodsmoke, wet stones, and a hint of Eucalyptus if I’m looking for it (almost like ah herbal tonic or medicinal flavor). The finish produces a pleasant sweetness and a nice warming sensation with lots of allspice and cinnamon, but also some hot cayenne or even jalapeno spice. There are still plenty of tannins, which dry out the mouth on the finish, in a nice sort of way. A little watery on day 1, but it filled in nicely on day 2 (much better on day 2). This needs lots of air—even on day 2 I found that it was best with a 2-4 hour decant. My best glass was the last one and it still seemed to be improving with every sip. Great wine! I have a 2013 bottle of Dunn HM and I’m going to make sure to give it tons of aeration whenever I open it.

It’s mature, but doesn’t taste old—the acidity helps give it a youthful vibrancy. I do wish that it had some more fruit, as it is just a hair on the tart side. Also, all the flavors are there, but very subtle. For these reasons, I wonder if it would have been a bit better a few years ago. Nevertheless, I was thrilled at the opportunity to have opened a 32 year old Dunn—not something that comes my way very often.

Just ok with steak. Great match with Pork tenderloin (marinated in Honey Mustard with Rosemary), but really best on its own. The nuances are so subtle that you miss them with food.

April 14, 2020 - Not rating, as bottle was flawed. Looked poorly maintained.

February 2, 2020 - WOW, outstanding wine, very smooth, tannins fully resolved, tasted great as soon as the cork was pulled, but after 3 hrs in a decanter it was even better, very long finish, great mouth feel.
