December 14, 2022 - Brought for a team dinner at Brenner Pass. Decanted 1.5hrs drank slightly chilled.

First things you notice is the typical deep inky black color you’d expect here. Very pronounced on the nose and kind of hits you in the face in not entirely pleasant way for me this time. I don’t recall noticing it on my last bottle but reading through the notes here I think I might’ve been getting the sassafrass/root beer notes MSU mentioned. I couldn’t put my finger on it at the time but I didn’t particularly enjoy that as it overpowered the rest of the aromas.

On the palate those notes were replaced by the much more expected dark fruit notes—full bodied with strong maybe overripe black currants leaning towards a syrup mouthfeel. Still very enjoyable on the palate with tannins not at all overpowering anymore (enjoyed with a lighter duck preparation).

Not sure how much better this will get but for my taste I would either wait to see if the aromatics mellow and meld with some more tertiary notes in a few years it just give a longer decant up front.

March 10, 2022 - Return to Napa; 3/6/2022-3/13/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): This had been open overnight and it’s still a pretty big wine with a lot more to come. Clear that Mark is channeling some of the old school Bordeaux where the wine needs some time but then can become great. Darker sweet fruit, more pepper, ends with some drying tannin. There’s a lovely freshness here though (perhaps the sage?) which gives a lot of balance to this wine. Clone 412 on 3309 rootstock.

November 25, 2021 - Drinking well even with only ~1 hour air in bottle. Definitely would’ve benefited from more air.

February 28, 2021 - I'm a bit more on the msu side of the spectrum with this bottle/vintage. First of 3. It didn't have the same complexity as the 2015/2016s I've had in the past. I decanted for 5 hours and kept at cellar temp until consuming.

It was bright, high toned, slightly overripe red fruit that didn't really strike me as "interesting" or complex until I had it with dinner (ribeye, salad, sautéed mushrooms) where it could stand up to the meat. But after dinner, it went back to being a bit one dimensional. I hope time will help this gain more complexity. I think it's more a challenge of the vintage all else equal.

I can't say how much the Block A missing from this plays into the wine either. In a vintage like 2016, my guess is if they bottled both blocks separately you'd have two killer 98 pt wines for different reasons. For 2017 the Block B was just because of the fires and losing Block A as msu noted.

I have 1 glass remaining I'll have in a few days and update my findings.

January 26, 2021 - First pours Coravin and it was really tight and reserved. 2 months since and this pour was a total different story. I do believe that Coravin kind of really slow ox the wine and this was a completely different wine than last time. Beautiful red fruits, baked spices and cassis galore. The finish won't stop lingering and that is a pretty dam good sign (at least for me)... Vangone is just top Napa juice!
