April 18, 2014 - Molasses, tar, and seawater nose. Potent, high-pitched palate. Limey with great acidity. Sweat. Nice.
April 4, 2012 - Deep tawny/brown. Wow, penetrating high tones that smell like a distillate and bore their way right into the primordial parts of the brain. This may be the highest acid beverage I've ever put into my mouth, but there is so much more going on aside from the acidity-citrus rind, cherries, green herbs, even cocoa. That said, the acidity neutralizes much of the sweetness. Medium to light weight, no alcoholic heat. At 55 years of age, I think the only problem with this is that it is 50 years too young; it needs a few more decades to smoothen out and fully integrate. Incredible stuff.
September 23, 2011 - Stunning bottle. Tastes like a very distinguished old Malvasia; like a Christmas pudding from a merry holiday feast. Piercingly pure aromas, silken texture, fairly high viscosity. Really a lovely wine.
May 28, 2011 - Designated 'Meio Seco.' Caramel with good pitch, but a slightly dirty undercurrent. Robust, medium sweet palate. Sappy and long. Enjoyable.
February 5, 2011 - Some off notes when bottle was opened, disappearing after 24 hrs. Straightforward nose of caramel, toffee, nuts, not very complex. Powerful palate with strong acidity, balancing well the sweetness. Medium length.
July 6, 2001 - A Madeira Tasting at Pereira d'Oliveira (Funchal): Medium-Sweet. Over 40 years on oak. Elegant, tangy acidity, lovely depth and concentration, medium-sweet but also a bit Verdelho-like; vanilla and caramel, complete, classic.
