November 15, 2023 - Another surprise star of the tasting. The red cherry, strawberry preserve, plum and sandalwood notes were ravishing on this wine. The structure was more reserved that other vintages around it, and the freshness was remarkable. This is drinking fabulously now.

April 6, 2023 - 2005 Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon Estate. Mid-dark garnet, brick edges, viscous (14.1 alc.); red fruit, raspberries, light mint, herbaceous, hint of wood; mid acids; mid tannins; balanced; long semi-tight Cabernet finish; some life left; nice style. 17-17.5 UC Davis scale, 92-93 other scales.

December 31, 2022 - Cork disintegrated, but I was able to salvage. Decanted approx 2 hours. Opened up quite a bit to reveal fruit, but also cocoa, menthol, and fine tannins. Quite dry, but wonderful.

October 16, 2022 - Purchased from the distributor that I used to work for. I think I paid $50? So exciting to try a wine from this iconic winery.

Color. Dark red. No brick at the edges.

Nose. Cherries, blackberries, cranberries, cassis, cocoa, cedar, oak.

Palate. Chocolate, cocoa, heavy tannins, cedar. There's a density to this wine that is dominated by cocoa powder. It's like taking a big spoonful for cocoa powder and trying to swallow it. The finish is powerful and long.

May 28, 2022 - Deep garnet, no amber edge present at this time. Bright, young red fruit, lead pencil and minerality that tames any big fruits. New leather, tree bark, red currant and sweet floral & perfume notes. Amazing glycerin that makes your mouth water and long for another taste. The incredible structure makes this wine enjoyable now, but provides a glimpse of what’s to come.

p.s. buttermilk chicken with goat cheese cauliflower mash and seared lemon green beans.
