July 8, 2023 - Similar to my prior note, though I found the acidity to be more prominent in this bottle. Also worth noting, the cork was stained halfway up, so wondering if there was some heat exposure or a less than ideal closure on this one.

All said, a very good wine, but not one that really excited me. Tight aromatically, superb weight and texture, elegant style, yet didn't have the layer of interest or complexity that pulled me in. The acidity and concentration should allow this to age for 5+ years, though.

February 11, 2023 - 93+ First class, serious juice from Raul Perez. Single vineyard blend, wild ferment, gentle handling, all the good stuff.

N: Brilliant play between bright crushed cherries, red apple skin, sloes, and a savoury cut of black pepper, cured beef and subtle oak.

P: Sleek, tuned balance. Med body, more bright forest fruit, plums, lifted with a touch of VA. Med tannins creep forward with med+ zippy acidity. Dried roses, potpourri, white pepper.

    F: New leather, dried cherries

September 30, 2022 - Reminds me of Northern Rhone. Pepper, dark berries, garrigue. Dense fruit, prominent acids, and refined tannins provide great structure. Drink now-2030.

September 28, 2022 - This is very floral on the nose, with ripe fruits (loads of them) and some nice spicy notes. On the palate, the bitterness is still present as noted in my 1st bottle from a year and a half ago, and it lingers on the finish. The wine is somewhat sweet, but the fruit is tasty and the finish is long. The wine has nice acidity and lingering (somewhat drying) tannins.

April 19, 2022 - Opened for 1 hour. Color is deep garnet with some purple hues. On the nose: Plum, cherry, espresso and dark chocolate. On the palate: Plum, tart cherry, dark chocolate and a hint of baking spices. I think needs a bit more time to open up but it’s good.

January 9, 2022 - I got into a bunch of Raul Perez stuff 2 years ago. So far the wines have been very good and interesting. This Las Gundinas is no exception. It is from the Mencia grape, but there may be small amounts of others blended in. I opened the bottle for dinner to go with a fresh Mediterranean style soup. The soup had a touch of spice, vegetables, and chicken in a tomato broth. Before the main course we tried it with olives, aged white cheddar, and dry salami. Upon opening, I could immediately get a nose of fresh cherry, raspberry, and something floral. In the glass, the wine is a beautiful medium violet color. The first taste was centered around ripe (not tart) cherry, raspberry, and licorice. The wine is slightly tannic with great mouth feel. I got a sense there was more to come as this opened up so I let it rest in the bottle for an hour. After an hour, the wine continued with the same fruit notes, however more earthiness and delicate notes began appearing. There is definitely an herbal appearance that I liken to lavender and a slight sense of pepper on the back end. We drank half the bottle and I saved half for tonight. This wine is in a great spot right now. I feel like it should be consumed over the next 5 years as it doesn't seem to be holding back. I am very excited about the rest of my Raul Perez wines now and can't wait to add the 2019 vintage. Drink well and be healthy, Cheers!
