Community Tasting Notes 2

January 21, 2024 - Our first tasting of this wine ( we have tried the 2016 which was more juicy, red fruited and no so classic) but this was more classic. Andreas who tried this first said Barbaresco, as the aromatics were there but also the color was light , Pinot looking, and with that cherry notes. Very elegant wine, less of fruity, juicy wine like the 2016 and more serious and true to the classic style . This is just at the start of its drinking window and given time this will become something even more special. 92-93 for now.

March 7, 2021 - Tasting shootout of Paliokalias vs Thymiopoulos Vrana Petra vs Aftorizo

    Light ruby color

Nose: In some ways similar to its bigger brother, Vrana Petra but has some distinctive differences. Leather, more barbecue meat than Vrana, red and blue forest currants, mountain dew.

Palate: Sweeter than Vrana, blueberry, strawberry, velvety tannins, cherry tomatoes, more open at this point with a heated stone element.

Although possibly giving more drinking pleasure today, it has a little less composure and accord than the Vrana Petra, just a hair less balance in some ways. Fans of sweeter new world pinots and modern nebbiolos will enjoy this.

    ---------
    Flight Notes

    Vrana Petra 2017

Light ruby color with a lighter rim than the Aftorizo.

Nose: light smoke, soft vanilla, cranberry, red and black currants, peach jam, some light gamey/meat note. Wouldn't guess this is Xinomavro, reminds me of Oregon Pinot but darker profiled.

Palate: a little muted, not as giving and open as the nose. I realize this is still young. Peach, strawberry, fig, smooth round tannins, light and dark cherry, hints of plum. Delicate, high quality. Velvety. Medium acidity.

    Aftorizo 2017

    Light ruby color

Nose: In some ways similar to its bigger brother, Vrana Petra but has some distinctive differences. Leather, more barbecue meat than Vrana, red and blue forest currants, mountain dew.

Palate: Sweeter than Vrana, blueberry, strawberry, velvety tannins, cherry tomatoes, more open at this point with a heated stone element.

    Paliokalias 2017

Ruby colour, darkest of the flight

Nose: Most reminiscent of xinomavro out of the three. Most intense of the flight although not the most harmonious nose. Strong scents of olive paste, tomatoes, vanilla, mature cherry, flowers, dark prune, straw, forest floor, balsamic vinegar, baked herbs. Massive aromatic bomb.

Palate: Most tannic of the flight, most explosive flavor. More olive, fresh sweet oregano leaves, rustic chopped hardwood, plum, currants, red pepper, light licorice, dark chocolate, black and red cherries, light tobacco. Gripping tannins.
