February 21, 2021 - Further to my notes on 5/5/20 and 25/11/14 this goes from strength to strength: now at its peak drinking window, it has the finesse and violets but has opened up completely and is firing on all cylinders. A remarkable achievement in such a modest vintage. Beats any other ‘super second’ growth ‘99 into a cocked hat, even a very good Ducru, and even Chateau Palmer too, imho, therefore a wotv contender.

December 25, 2020 - Really lovely wine out of magnum for Christmas dinner - nicely mature with notes of leather and graphite alongside sweet red and black fruit and just a touch of molasses on the nose. On the palate it is nicely round with that sweetness on the initial attack though it dries out a little and the finish is a tad clipped. That said....it exceeds the expectations of the vintage and will continue to give much pleasure over the next 10 years.

December 21, 2020 - Coravin fun - Leoville Barton and new arrivals (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Ripe black fruits; plums, blackcurrant, toast, a little leather, earth, savoury spices, and a slight meaty farmyard note, vanilla, oak a little prevalent here. Medium plus intensity acidity, similar fruit and oak profile on the palate as shows on the nose, tannins are chalky and drying with a touch 'sucking a pebble' and there is some alcohol warmth and cocoa powder on the finish. Time to settle perhaps?

    December 10, 2020 - An amazing surprise!

Not particularly long or complex, but a very enjoyable treat all-round. Soft dark fruit on the nose, with good weight and mouthfeel on the palate with a bit of lead pencil thrown in. By no means a blockbuster, but absolutely lovely to drink.

October 10, 2020 - About 4 years ago I was somewhat disconcerted by the relative austerity and strong backbone of this wine and remarked "I am unsure whether this will open up further to reveal greater complexity or will dry out from here". I am glad to say that it is the former which applies. This is still a robust virile wine with a savoury complexion but gracious and fragrant aromas are now singing and harmony reigns. Like good mature Médoc should be, it was digestible and moreish and revealed new facets to the end of the bottle, alas my last. Very good.
