Community Tasting Notes 49

October 29, 2013 - Smooth, black fruit, iodine, smoke: very similar to the 2005 Herman Story Larner Vineyard that we started the evening with, and and slightly more approachable, but there's not enough fruit or complexity to stand up all that well to the 15.9% alcohol. Not to my taste, and glad to be done with this case.

December 21, 2012 - Decanted for an hour, drank with several people over three hours and dinner. Inky purple in the glass, full bodied. Nose of black fruits, figs, and meat. On the palate, black and blue fruits, fig, and slight bacon. Very smooth with a medium-long finish. This has evolved into a truly outstanding syrah, with the high alcohol finally in great balance with the fruit, acid, and tannins.

July 16, 2012 - Opaque crimson, garnet meniscus. Blackberrries and petrol on the nose. This has turned into an outstanding Syrah, and a decent, though not stellar. QPR at $28 I paid, but loses a point or two (in my book) because the alcohol is still a factor. Beautifully integrated tannins, opulent dark fruit. Our dinner guests loved it with grilled lamb-burgers. The finish is medium long, but the alcohol adds a less than pleasant twist.

February 25, 2012 - Vinturied and decanted for two hours. Deep purple-red. In an evening of shirazes and syrahs, some liked this a lot; I found it a little disjointed, with the 15.9% alcohol a bit intrusive. Powerful and still fruit-forward.

February 21, 2012 - Thibs was good, but I liked it more in its youth when I tried it 3.5 years ago.. still nice, and very balanced given the ridiculous alcohol level of 15.9%
