Community Tasting Notes 7

October 7, 2016 - Better on nose than palate, but palate is fine! Floral nose with citrus zest and ginger, on palate very light but very precise. Flavorful, bright, real Kabinett. B+/A-

October 6, 2016 - The nose on this made me laugh - whenever I approach a Von Schubert wine I wonder if I'm going be able to pick out the aromas I consider typical. When I stuck my nose in this, those aromas slapped me across my face: so sweet, tropical and herbal. Not lychee but some sort of tropical: mango? papaya? definitely melon and some marzipan, maybe very ripe cherimoya, and grass herbs. The palate is more dry with melon, musky melon, grass, a little crystalline sweetness. Crisp finish of melon and herbs. Nose - 5/6, Palate - 4.5-5/6, Finish - 5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1-1.5/2 = 15.5-16.5/20.

September 16, 2016 - Purchased about 15-16 years ago. Taken to Red Hen and drunk with YiXin Ong and several summery/saladish dishes involving corn, tomatoes, grilled peaches, burrata, arugula, zatar, beets (not all in the same dish).

Cork tight and intact. Bottle decanted and immediately poured. Showed more fruit immediately on nose than I typically sense on aged kabinetts and none of that "is that a faint taste of old, untoasted oak" that I frequently discern on aged riesling that hasn't yet opened up. After about 20 minutes, fruit really came out and wine was truly quite excellent. Balanced, very faintly sweet - really very faintly - lively acid. YiXin thought it too young but I thought it walked a great line between developed and fresh. Great match with the food. Shame it was my last bottle.

Wait staff couldn't believe they were tasting such "old" white wine and it was so fresh. Ah, the young - they have so much to learn!

February 3, 2013 - very good, solid acids, midbodied wine, limes and petrol, I enjoy. B+

January 29, 2006 - A weekend of Jacky Truchot; 1/28/2006-1/29/2006 (Washington DC): Serious petrol nose. Lemon-lime-grapefruit. Sheet rock elements. Short finish, a bit slick. Enjoyable.
