Community Tasting Notes 4

August 4, 2022 - 1/20 disgorgement. Floral, herbal, apple skin notes on the nose, very clearly PM. Solid-feeling extract and crunchy acidity on the palate, without being too racy for its own good. This is interesting and good, and it may well age and develop into something special. But I prefer the Lahert PM Extra Brut Rose with a couple of years of cellaring.

November 11, 2021 - Prickly and slightly rustic on its initial entry, this vintage of Vignes d'Autrefois hucks a few prongs on the attack, pricking the palate with steely and acidic shots that almost numb the senses temporarily before some yellow citrus, Mirabelle plum, and bitter red apple notes start to emerge. Finishes similarly bristly, with a barbed tail that nips at the tongue. Kicking back in the glass with a bit of air certainly helped to dull the angularity here, but it remained consistently defensive in posture throughout consumption.

Currently, this is a far step behind the 2012, 2013, and 2014 vintages. The 2012 is the benchmark for the Vignes d'Autrefois. And yes, perhaps that could change over time (which indeed serves these Champagne well), but comparatively, the 2016 should find a nice quiet corner in the cellar for the next few years to see if it learns how to behave like its more refined older siblings. 88-89+ points.

2016 vintage. Disgorged 01/2020. 100% PM. labeled as 2-4g/L dosage.

September 24, 2021 - Bubbly fresh, some yellow versus pink in color. Clearly a dark grape. Not superdry, slightly bready in the taste medium body, round. Refreshing and good. Could improve with age.
