February 8, 2019 - One of those bottles you wish to drink forever. A bit defensive in the beginning, the nose soon opens to irresistible charm and elegance. Still in the beginning of its drinking window, with ample freshness and mineral expressions, this wine is built to please. Mature cherry, violet, plum, delicately contrasted by cedar, tobacco, chocolate, caramel, menthol, thyme. Very noble cask, leveraging the elegance of the wine to perfection. A true blockbuster to be opened now or during another decade.
January 12, 2019 - Drank as part of a verticle with a '90, '92, '95, and in everyone's opinion, this was the bell of the ball. This wine was at its peak and did not show any signs of decline. Complex nose, red cherry, dried herbs, and a hint of leather on the finish leading to a euphoria-inducing lingering finish. If you have this wine drink it now as it is as close to perfection as can be imagined.
December 26, 2018 - Enjoyed over an evening. On opening, cork was in great shape and no hints of anything to be concerned about, even 21 years later. Fair bit of sediment. First notes were of currant, and a bit of a chalky cherry that was thoroughly pleasant. 20 years has smoothed this significantly and within 20 minutes or so it was revealing a fewer more flavours, some savoury - and a bit of ringing tartness that stayed present for minutes after a taste. Very enjoyable, perhaps past its peak - maybe the little bit thin - but in my opinion only slightly. Hope we cross paths again.
November 19, 2018 - delicious. a little hot. did not meet expectations. similar character to a left bank
November 3, 2018 - 3 Decades of Sassicaia Masterclass with Priscilla Incisa della Rochetta (Decanter FWE, The Landmark hotel, London): From Magnum. Quite a dark color still bit with bricking on the rim that hints to a bit of age. The nose is actually quite youthful and granted it has some secondary touches. The nose could be confused for classic left bank bordeaux. Still in ts prime, leathery, cedar and has evolved very nicely. Dark fruited and at times felt quite primary fruit a testament to the longevity of these wines. Herbal side too here. Silky tannin and drinks superbly now and most likely at peak. Another great late 90s Sassicaia . 94
September 15, 2018 - Pre 'Typhoon Mangkhut' White Truffle Birthday Dinner (Octavium, 8/F, 22 Des Veoux Road, Central, Hong Kong): From a double magnum opened but not decanted for 5 hours. Semi opaque deep ruby-purple colour but transparent at the meniscus. Nose is deep mature black/red cherry, high noted acetone nail varnish, oak, roses. Palate is gorgeous acidic freshness, tons of tannic backbone but already accessible, pencil lead precision, graphite, very integrated and harmonious. A truly beautiful wine. Great resonance on the finale but just short of thunderous. Superb with the white truffle and chantrelle mushroom Tagliolini.
June 2, 2018 - Ripe black cherry. Tomato leaf and violets. Herbs - rosemary. Rounded finish. Smooth tannins. Thyme. Slight smokiness.
March 10, 2018 - Nose: B++ Palate: B++
My #7, Group's #8 (75 pts). Part of a Super Tuscan tasting. Tasted blind.
March 1, 2018 - Italian Retrospective at the Texas Wine School. This was one of the top wines of the night according to many of the participant, myself included. Decanted for about an hour, it kept on tasting better and better. Clear, medium plus ruby fading to garnet on the rim. The nose is clean and of medium plus intensity. The nose is wonderfully expressive, with dried roses, black fruit, leather and vanilla. The palate is dry, with medium (+) acidity and medium (+) tannins. The alcohol is medium and unobtrusive at 13%. The tannins are very smooth and silky. Medium to medium (+) body, with a velvety mouthfeel and a smooth, medium (+) long finish. This wine is outstanding in its elegance and balance. It could easily pass for a very high end Left Bank Bordeaux. It is incredibly age-worthy and should continue to show well for several more years.
February 28, 2018 - 4thWednesdays - Giorgio & Paulo's Italian Wine Extravaganza - Feb 2018 (Texas Wine School, Houston, Tx): A: Deep ruby with brown highlights. Sediment present. This wine looks younger than 21 years old.
N: Medium (+) intensity. Dried blackberry, dried cassis, plum, chocolate, coffee, clove, dried red flowers
P: Nose confirmed. Dry, HIGH acid (G said medium '+' but my reaction was high), high alcohol feeling from the burn but later found that was my reaction to the insane acidity as the alcohol is medium at 13%, medium (+) tannin, full body, pronounced intensity and long finish
