Community Tasting Notes 3

January 29, 2024 - Wow. Medium ruby color. When I popped and poured this lots of crunchy red berry fruit. After 1 hour of air the sweet red cherries are more pronounced. Very sweet. Balanced by high acidity. Really picking up the stems here. Black tea notes on the mid palate. Very spicy. David isn't performing formula wine making here. He is following his own path. An excellent effort.

April 2, 2023 - Agreed with the earlier review. The nose doesn't reflect what you taste on the palate. Going to do a 3 day tasting on this one. day 1 is fresh lively cherry, prominent acidity and nice tannins. Will see where it goes over the next 2 days.
Day 2 - much the same as day 1. Felt more rounded but still quite prominent barnyard on the nose.
Day 3 - Surprisingly the barnyard has completely blown off, but there is tons of cherry and a bit of strawberry going on, with no change to the level of acidity. The nose is a bit mute but the wine is shining today.
Upped my score to 90 based on Day 3 showing. Not going to touch my other 2019s for a long time based on this little experiment.

March 17, 2022 - Finishing off the last of the Sun Break Pinots from the BD13 purchase. A ton of brett on the nose – and still present after a 3+ hour decent, probably needed a longer decant. Nose of barnyard (which was probably hiding a lot from me) and bright bing cherries. Medium light bodied, higher than normal Pinot acidity, and overall great freshness on the palate. Bright cherries, currants, spices, and a bit of earth on the palate. Medium-heavy smooth tannins. Long spicy acidic and fruity finish.

I suspect this one will need time aging and a long hour long decant. Outside of the barnyard, I loved what the wine had here. This might be one of the best American Pinots I have had outside of the nose. There are enough tannins that this one will stand up to a hearty meal. Yet it is light enough it will please a Pinot fan. The depth and complexity is here. But unlike the rest of the bottlings from Sun Break, I just can’t get past the nose on this one – it’s a complete distraction to me.

Despite my low score today – I really want to buy more bottles of this, store it in the back of the cellar, and revisit in many years.
