December 2, 2023 - St Hugo Coonawarra Cabernet Vertical spanning 3 Decades (Merce's Castle): Under cork which came out in one piece and was in excellent condition. Amazing this is nearly 20 years old! From the classic 2004 vintage which was quite dark in colour. Very enjoyable up front, very fruit forward, well balanced, and had everything in the right place except for the finish which disappeared very quickly. Enjoyable but no real excitement factor or complexity. Won’t get any better so time to drink up. Wasn’t the weakest in the flight but was just over-awed on the night with the company it was in.

September 14, 2022 - Still dark in colour, just a touch of bricking around the edges. Classic blackfruits and a slight herbal note on nose. Medium bodied, with again classic cab and Coonawarra on the palate; no overt oak, just tasty fruit and a hint of secondary characteristics and cedar. At first, there was a pinch of VA and a weird herbal note, but these dissipated over time. After a couple of hours, this was in a good place and it even improved a bit on the second day. No rush on this, but drinking well now certainly (A-).

June 29, 2021 - I'm enjoying this. Can't agree with the comment that fruit is subdued. Blackberry and cigar box to the fore. Structure still there - and in any case at this age the longevity of the cork is pivotal. If your storage is good and the cork is kind, this is not in decline.

I wouldn't say it's a 'wow' wine - lacks the balance for that - but it's got its virtues.

June 26, 2021 - Blackcurrant, eucalyptus and cigar box aromas. Finished a little dry. Good drinking perhaps at the start of its decline based on this bottle

March 9, 2021 - Translucent garnet. Medium-plus bodied, this wine is à point at the moment, bold blackcurrant fruit notes on the nose and palate, elegant on entry, some slightly drying raspy tannins and acidity, good balance and at peak drinking. Note: this bottle had been professionally cellared since release.
