November 19, 2021 - This particular bottle took some time to open up. After an hour or two of slow O2 and then allowing it to open up in the glass without getting too warm, the color and palate became deeper and significantly more succulent, morphing from a whiter, more linear and steely expression into a lovely salmon hue with Pinot Noir-driven flavors of black cherry, orange spray, strawberry water, oyster shell, sea foam, Himalayan pink salt rock, and chalk. Last glass was the best and most complete. Consider using a BDX glass, which I always do (Riedel Vitis). No flutes allowed.

    0 g/L dosage. 100% Pinot Noir. Disgorged 06/2020. 12.5% ABV.

October 11, 2021 - Coming into a prime drinking window now. In fact, I’ll likely be drinking these sooner than later. Perfectly balanced and flavor-giving all the way around. Previous notes apply otherwise.

March 14, 2021 - This bottle was even better than the previous one from last year. Perfect delineation of flavor and precise focus. A straight-line bead of effervescence lets the beautifully layered and exacting execution of fruit parade along the palate with purpose. The bubbles provide measured energy for the exquisite passage of the complex and concentrated flavors that seem to move through the finish with a cadence that is both lively and organized. 96-97 points this time around. Well done. This stands toe-to-toe with Maillart's other vintage designate Champagnes (especially reminding me of a more stately version of the Jolivettes). Just ordered more of the FdP from VDLT!

    November 28, 2020 - Disgorged 04/2018. 100% Pinot Noir. 0g/L dosage. From 1er Cru vines planted in 1973.

The 2012 Nicolas Maillart Francs de Pieds is a stunning Champagne that impresses not only for its exquisite and complex overall flavor profile, but as much for its impeccable balance and smooth jazz seamlessness, especially for a zero dosage specimen. Completely avoids any angularity or sharp alkaline bitterness that can often surface sans dosage.

Pours an orange salmon flesh color with a slightly flamboyant bead initially, but quickly gets into step and finds perfect rhythm and focus. A labyrinth of pluot, black cherry, red apple flesh, dried apricot, grapefruit rind, apple pie crust, dried golden fig, and currant flavors. Medium-plus weighted on the mid-palate, with the effervescence adding just enough push so as to not distract from the core fruit components providing an elongated savoriness on the tail. Finishes with a finessed piquancy that beckons for another sip. Superb. 95-96+ points. Drink now or hold for a few years with confidence.

November 7, 2020 - Nose: The nose is so deep and balanced as it fills the glass with Toast, brioche, spiced pears, red apples, cherries, biscuit, Meyer lemon, crushed rocks, flint, citrus, and vanilla. There is a nuance to the nose that keeps drawing you back and it really blossoms as the wine warms up ever so slightly.

Taste: The feel is medium bodied with racy, high acidity. Even at this younger stage, there is a lot of depth and poise to the feel with Toast, brioche, spiced pears, red apples, cherries, biscuits, meyer lemons, crushed rocks, flint notes, and a touch of vanilla that creeps in.

Overall: This may be young but it is also stunning. This really performs at a slightly warmer temperature so as to let all of the deep and nuanced tones really sing in harmony. In some ways I’m not surprised at how good this is given the producer and vintage, I just didn’t expect it to be this good already. This is tremendous.
