    June 24, 2014 - Very similar to the last time - this is a decent earthy blackberry and currant fruit laced wine, not overly complex, but decent balance and juicy acidity with fine tannins. Overall this comes accross as medium bodied with a nice finish.

    April 2, 2014 - - Garnet color with medium forming legs. It's balanced with a medium body. Silky texture with a medium finish - Interesting take on Aglianico. Agree with JR. Burgundy-like in overall impression. Medium weight with powdery tannins. Great Tuesday night spaghetti with meat sauce wine.

    March 9, 2012 - Nose was much more red fruited than I expected after the last bottle. Settling down or just aging? Either way, chalky minerality over the red fruits on the nose. Palate was more consistent with the tarry black fruits and herbaceousness. Finish seems to be a bit clipped. Light to medium bodied.

    (Bisceglia Aglianico del Vulture Terra di Vulcano) Under screwcap. There is some reduction on the nose here, warm fruit, although with a welcome edge of freshness to it as well. Good substance on the palate, plenty of texture and depth, supple with a ripe core of tannins and a velvety, charcoaly layer of fruit. Nicely tannic finish. Intriguing wine.

    (BISCEGLIA Terra di Volcano AGLIANICO) Aglianico Dear Friends, If you are looking to travel off the beaten path, to an Italy that is aware of modern society but still resembles the turn of the last century, I highly recommend a trip to Basilicata - one of the most beautiful places in the world (with the kindest people and most unspoiled cuisine you will ever come across). From the 1950s-era Amalfi Coast-a-like of Maratea to the hinterlands of the inland mountains, Basilicata is a feast for the senses. Hilltop towns sprout like daffodils in spring and they remain as authentic as it gets in Western Europe. Undiscovered and untread, the region is sandwiched between Puglia, Campania and Calabria - it is the instep to Italy's heal and boot and, as recently as 15-20 years ago, no highways crisscrossed its bounds. The climate is warm, dry and divine and the food is also rustic and deeply satisfying. Produce is only available in season (the way it used to be) and the locals feast in late spring on artichokes, asparagus, gigantic red and yellow peppers and the freshest cipollini onions you will find. The pasta is so dense and toothy, each piece is like a freshly kneaded piece of dough (in the best of ways). Oh yes, they also produce wine....undiscovered wine that will not remain so for long. If Basilicata has its one-man wine fan club, that honor goes to Mario Bisceglia - a man intent on bridging the countryside of his homeland with the rest of the wine-drinking world. Like others before him in the "unlucky" districts of Italy (those without international wine fame - Umani Ronchi of Le Marche comes to mind) his will be a tough road but one that can lead to riches that go beyond the monetary. Why Basilicata? What Basilicata has at its roots over other regions of Italy is simple: soil and climate - unique and supremely rich volcanic soil from Monte Vulture (that some say is still apt to blow its top), vineyard terrain with mountainous elevation grades and one of Europe's finest climates. The result is a recipe for endless wine success. As an example, where Galardi's Aglianico (the principle varietal used for Terra di Lavoro) benefits from a sea influence and the influence of Vesuvius, Bisceglia's vineyard stock benefits from the Vulture volcanic effect but also the dry and near-perfect climate of this region. The day and night temperatures can vary by as much as 50 degrees giving inland Basilicata an almost high-desert feel. By contrast, Galardi's temperature variation is quite small due to their perch near the Mediterranean and the climate is far more humid. While one climate is not necessarily better than the other, each produces a different takes on Aglianico with equal success. If nothing else, it is interesting to note that I asked winemakers from all over Italy (including Piedmont and Alto Adige) which region had the most ideal balance of terroir and potential in Italy - many said Sicily but just as many said Basilicata. If you are a fan of red Burgundy and/or Taurasi, Bisceglia's 2006 Terra di Volcano (literally, the terroir of the volcano) will seduce you for a pittance of a price. From a great vintage (as 2006 has turned out to be in most of central and southern Italy), this silk and red-spiced charmer has a Pinot Noir-like texture meshed with a finely grained, serious backbone - its versatility and food-friendly red-fruit style will be appreciated by many of you (it would be a terrific house-wine). Laughably low-priced, this is the face of a new generation that doesn't know Chianti Classico is the only accepted $15 red wine south of Florence: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as an exploration into an area that is not the everyday but will be soon enough...
