Community Tasting Notes 3

March 6, 2021 - Followed an excellent Stellenbosch 2007 and dry, classic 2006 Paulliac which seemed chalky in comparison. This is fruitier and spicier than the Paulliac, which I’m almost surprised by: I was expecting it to seem mushroomy and old. It’s definitely dry, especially on the finish but the entry is classic Saint Emillion fruity Christmas spice. A little bit subdued but and lacking intensity but structurally this is quite good. I prefer it to the 06 Pauillac. Very dry now and I get some slight Rioja oak as it linger but super dry. Short finish.

May 29, 2019 - Classic nose. Some maturity but about right for a 2001 at this level. Finish is a touch short and it was overshadowed by an excellent entrecôte steak, which needed a richer and younger wine. Good afterwards, nice mature complex classic claret that you would expect at 18 years of age (pencil shavings, blackcurrant, some sous bois, a touch of mushroom, herbs and spices, hint of coconut). Only fault is that it’s a bit thin and short but expected at this price point.

March 19, 2018 - Quite good but missing something. Maybe a longer decant would have been good. This was an hour. It’s mature yet still lots of life left. Slightly short finish, acid on the finish. Classic Bordeaux nose with cassis and a touch of oak. On the palate cherry and dark fruits and some coconut. Short finish. Better with Gouda and cheddar cheese than a beef stew.
