October 3, 2021 - What a treat to try such an old barolo.
On opening the N was subtle but clearly rose petals. The cork pretty much disintegrated, but actually smelled of rose petals too!
Poured into a decanter to remove sediment. There was quite a lot and it was not really possible to separate from the liquid (had been stood up in cellar for 3 days…). Drunk immediately.
On P it was smooth and light on its feet. It had length and complexity. Characteristic notes of rose petal, licquorice and tar. Sweet tannin. Obviously old and trying to hold it together just long enough to give us a drink!
The food we had with it (steak with truffle butter) knocked it over so it was better on its own.
After 40 mins or so the structure had collapsed. The wine still tasted nice but it was falling apart. Smooth and sweet tannin but losing it.
An experience - very interesting to try this to see how barolo can age.
This was apparently the centenary year for the winery.
