Community Tasting Notes 3

August 21, 2012 - This bottle showed a little more aged than my previous ones. A strong leathery component to the aromas, then there's more of a red currant scent, leaning at times to a dried fruit/balsamic note. The palate has a respectable amount of fruit left, but the tannins stick out a bit with their dusty, rustic texture. Still a very enjoyable bottle, needs food though. Decanted 1.5 hours before drinking.

March 30, 2012 - Decanted about an hour before serving, and I think that helped this bottle show more density on the palate, where it had a nice amount of flesh to complement the racy acidity and buffer the slightly rustic tannins. On the nose, it had a distinct leather note along with some plummy fruit. I really enjoyed this bottle with the decant; it definitely showed better than the previous one.

March 2, 2012 - When initially opened, this bottle had almost no aroma and tasted fairly thin, with grainy tannins as the dominant impression. After it was allowed to stand open for a couple of hours, though, it certainly opened up significantly. Dusty dark cherry fruit on the nose, along with a sort of meaty note I couldn't quite place. The palate had filled out a bit, but it retained a smooth, light to medium weight to accompany its bright acidity. There's also a kind of spiced orange peel quality in the mouth that bespeaks the bottle age here. The tannins remained prominent and rustic, and thus this wine really needs to be paired with food. I suspect a decant would have helped bring the fruit a little more to the fore here, and the wine is certainly sturdy enough to withstand it. Color was a deep ruby to plum at the core, no signs of browning on the rim at all.
