February 18, 2018 - Killer Cali Cab; amazing typicity and outstanding enjoyment for a much more palatable price than most of the big hitters (particularly for back-vintage!). Having sipped this with intrigue at a tasting, I grabbed a bottle - upon opening, I did have a slight fear that I had been swept up in the moment and that perhaps it would be tough for the wine to live up to its billing. Fortunately, all it took was one sniff, one taste, to put that concern to rest. Initial oak notes quickly blew off to reveal a brilliant nose/palate and a wonderfully balanced wine. Perfectly ripe raspberry, red/black cherry, and black currant mingled with herbs (thyme, sage), black pepper, and licorice root. A tremendous streak of cigar spice and smokiness ran throughout, prominent but not overbearing. Hints of crushed stone, green pepper, and citrus zest made appearances at various times. On the finish, the wine continued to show plenty of cigar box along with a well integrated sense of cherry pie/baked fruit. It was still drinking quite fresh; aside from touches of leather, there were very little in the way of tertiary characteristics. Firm but round tannins and a rich body allowed for a wonderful mounthfeel, but also gave the impression of a bottle that could go for a while yet. Drink now or hold - definitely won’t be disappointment in either case!

August 2, 2017 - Opened 45 minutes before pairing with grilled beef shish kabobs. I was a bit worried by the last 2 notes left on this wine. The interior of the capsule smells strongly of asphalt. Good cork. A dark though not quite opaque ruby in the glass, with good color out to the edges without any bricking. The nose features strong cassis, currant, black cherry, tobacco box and a touch of green bell pepper. Medium-bodied on the palate, though nearly weightless, but with wonderful intensity. Almost brings tears to the eyes. A certain dusty slate character to this, with a tobacco-box tinged, long and lingering finish. This was an excellent bottle, so sorry to be our last!

May 6, 2017 - It was excellent! For 5 minutes. Then it died and turned into burnt toast. After a couple hours it improved a little but not enough. Very disappointed. A waste of calories. The vodka soda tasted so much better. It would have made good gift, though.

There's no way a Cabernet should be this bad at 12 years so I have to assume it is a bad bottle

December 17, 2015 - **Disclaimer: This bottle was recently given to me as a gift and spent most of its life in what I suspect were less-than-ideal conditions.**

Extraordinarily supple nose showing distinctive bottle age upon first opening and decanting. Unfortunately, the aromas shift toward stewed, wilted fruit in the glass, suggesting this bottle is past its prime. However, swirling the glass presented striking minerality reminiscent of dusty slate, which was the most pleasant aspect left of this wine. The palate was surprisingly tannic and austure; the "finish" left a bitter/chemical aftertaste. I eventually finished the bottle over the course of an evening (it was a gift so I felt obligated) but it was genuinely difficult to drink. Bummer, this was probably a solid wine in its prime.
