February 16, 2024 - Enjoyed this wine. Apple and floral notes on the nose. I get butterscotch and some oak on the palate. The finish is medium long.

January 28, 2024 - Completely different taste profile compared to just 8 months ago. This can no longer be confused with a typical Chablis, definitely a ringer for a Cote de Beaune white. The oak influence is obvious now with generous buttery, marzipan, almost sweet notes on the nose. Enters the palate creamy, broad and round but balanced throughout by a striking acidity. Extremely fine overall despite the slightly prominent alcohol on the finish. These magical 110 year old vines create what I believe is currently the best value white under the burgundy sky.

December 6, 2023 - Starts out a bit disjointed, but settles into a rather rich profile of ripe apples, almond paste, and butterscotch with a slightly bitter finish. Really interesting to smell and taste.

    The natural cork was perfect.

September 8, 2023 - I’m running out of those. Damn they’re good. Served double blind. My awesome blind tasting master of a friend went directly to 2020 but went to Saint-Aubin 1er Cru instead. See my previous CT notes. Great wine.

June 28, 2023 - No use waiting on this one, it’s so good right now. See previous notes. I blinded a friend on this and her guess was 2019 Chablis 1er Cru. I can see why since upon opening there is salinity on the nose and finish.

June 16, 2023 - Purchased grapes from a parcel of 110 year old vines. Hand harvest, fermentation in neutral barrels. 15 months on the lees than racked into stainless steel tanks. Unfiltered. Production of 4 barrels.
Serious wine. It needs to breathe as it was a little tight upon opening. The initial whiff was Chablis-like but the nose changed after a little time in the glass: lemon, lemon zest, green almonds, a touch of cream and lemon curd and some salinity still on the nose (sea breeze?). You can almost smell the texture of this wine if such a thing can be said… The palate is all about texture: dense and dry extract. The initial mouthfeel is rather round but never creamy but from the mid-palate onwards, the citrus and minerality take over. It finishes tart and mineral but goes on for a while. You can chew the finish on this wine. I like it and agree that it punches above its pay grade. I think this only sees neutral oak yet the cream on the nose and the entry felt like it had an oak “patine”, wonder what it is? Malo?

June 11, 2023 - No decant, followed over the course of a few hours. This is a tremendously flavorful wine. On the initial attack, you don't sense the acidity, but instead are hit with a wall of fruit, followed very quickly by a wallop of dry extract and minerality. The length / persistence is notable. For me, because of the huge mid palate and tamed acidity, I kept putting this back in the fridge to cool it down. Flavor gets excellent scores, but wish it had a little more acidity. Perhaps a few more years will tame the mid palate a bit? Let's see, but for now a tasty wine.

May 27, 2023 - Incredible value for money. Nose opens flinty with slight reduction, but this clears very quickly. Smells almost like a Chablis, but on warming, some nice buttery, marzipan notes but nothing overwhelming. On the palate, this was lean, tight and compact with a great acidity providing an amazing freshness reflecting the vintage. The deft use of oak only shows itself on the finish, lending some richness to the wine. However, I was expecting a bit more palate density given the 110 year old vines here, that would really push this to stratospheric levels. Perhaps with some age, this could put on more weight but even now, this is the best Montagny I have had. Ridiculous QPR, easily outdrinks many Puligny without the heavy price tag. Buy.
