Community Tasting Notes 4

April 7, 2011 - As the 2004 Boisseau red is a library wine (not for sale) at Linden Vineyards, it is available by the glass ($9) or during a reserve cellar tasting only for a limited time. The photo is borrowed from the 2007 vintage. The wine is single vineyard blend of 77% Cabernet Franc, 20% Petit Verdot, and 3% Merlot. The nose is expressive and full, showing distinct but harmonious tones of ripe red/dark fruits, tobacco, soil, dried herbs, and tire rubber. On the palate the wine opens with gorgeously ripe and succulent, yet authentic dark fruit flavors. These extend through and integrate with a midpalate of dark roasted coffee and smoked pepper. The wine lingers on the palate, finishing long with hints of aged tobacco, mocha, and silky sweet tannins. The wine has a round and lush texture, yet remains focused in its integration flavors. The wine is gorgeously smooth, showing fantastic intensity of flavors and balance. Overall this is an outstanding effort that simultaneously shows both power and restrained elegance. Drink now.

March 25, 2011 - This is Jim Law’s first use of this vineyard. My understanding is that he started sourcing from this vineyard in anticipation of losing the Avenius vineyard source. This is primarily Cab. Franc (77%) with Petit Verdot (20%) and a bit of Merlot (3%) to round out the blend. Four years have passed since drinking the first bottle of this. I still like this - a lot, but DDB finds fault with too much green bell pepper. Yes, it’s there, but muted on the mid-palate. Before it surfaces, ripe raspberries, sandalwood, black olives and smoke abound. Only then does the green bell pepper pop up. It then fades to a smokey, rosemary that then mutates to a toasty vanilla from the oak. Good fruit on the attack and firm structure to hold it together. Excellent balance. 13.9% alc. With cheeses, roasted pork loin and crusty bread. Recommended.

February 13, 2011 - Best wine poured, really seems to be in its sweet spot right now. Decent dark fruit with provencial herbs shinning through. Definately can tell this is CF based wine with the pepper notes as well. Good stuff.

July 16, 2007 - This is Jim Law’s first use of this vineyard. My understanding is that he started sourcing from this vineyard in anticipation of losing the Avenius vineyard source. This is primarily Cab. Franc (77%) with Petit Verdot (20%) and a bit of Merlot (3%) to round out the edges. The Pets provides a deep color palette of black cherry with cranberry on the rim. The nose is full of fruit, but this is not a fruit forward wine. It’s approachable, but not fruit driven. Black cherry, tobo, vanilla, sandalwood, plum, rosemary (and maybe some other herbs) and cedar all appear in the bouquet. This is one deep wine. Good fruit on the attack. Excellent balance with bright acidity and firm tannins. This is a delight to drink. A surprisingly high alcohol for a Va. wine of 13.9%, but it is not noticeable on the palate one bit. With beef (sirloin) salad with balsamic sauteed mushrooms. (Beef seasoned with Hitching Post seasoning). Highly Recommended.
