Community Tasting Notes 13

October 4, 2014 - Super Tasting 4 of 5; Chris does 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape (Chris' House): Double decanted about 2 hours in advance, served blind. On first sniff we could tell something was amiss here; stewed, raisined and heavy notes of bruised apple. A second bottle was pulled fresh from the cellar with similar notes.

October 4, 2014 - Year 2 - Super Tasting 4 of 5 - Chris does 2001 Chateauneuf-du-Pape: (tasted blind, wine #3) I brought two bottles back from the Domaine and popped both at this tasting and sadly both were flawed and significantly different than what I had when I was there. The aromatics were quite stewed with dates, prunes and high alcohol. Something must have happened to these bottles.

This was brought back by Chris from the estate and both bottles we tried were in very rough shape showing obvious oxidative characteristics. Storage?

June 11, 2013 - 100% Grenache aged in old oak. Tasted with Franck at the Domaine. I wish I would have taken more formal notes, but this was a lovely wine and he allowed me to buy two bottles. Apparently the vineyard is next to Rayas, but contrary to Rayas they do not do any whole cluster. I told Frank he should allow some stems and he said he was thinking of doing so and others had requested the same. The sandy soil this is grown in comes through in the wine. Light, transparent, red fruited. Subtle bouquet or red currants, light coffee, quite clean for coming from a small farmhouse cellar. Palate is easy drinking with great acidic bite, and a nice moderate red fruited finish with lovely spice notes.
