August 31, 2019 - Quite tasty but not an extraordinary Margaux. Different in style than other years I've sampled but not viewing that as a negative. Nose is forceful and has raspberry liqueur and earth and woody scents - a mix of fir and cedar.

Attack remains energetic after 30+ years in the bottle and tannins are still prominent. Mid palate is layered and interesting, inviting more sampling. Finish works with the overall package.

A very tasty wine but this is not what I'd consider top tier margaux.

August 28, 2019 - As much as I put most of my attention to Burgundy, I still adore the occasional Bordeaux, especially when it is a First Growth. Tasted blind - Rich, Bordeaux blend, fragrant herbs, gravel underbrush, sexy wood spices and volumous texture. 2006 Pauillac? (Yep, my Burgundy palate needs a lot more calibration when it comes to Bordeaux!) Potentially Pomerol but First growth quality for sure. Very young for what it is. Margaux fragrant showed up after an hour. (95/100)

August 15, 2019 - The wine, or at least this bottle seems to have become more tannic over the years. With 4 hours of air, the wine retained its tannic spine. Powerful, full-bodied, dense and aromatic, the wine fills your mouth with ripe, fresh, bright, earthy, red fruits. The finish is long and while somewhat strict, there is a regal air to the fruits. But you find a bit of a stern character in the ending that is always going to remain a part of the experience.

June 1, 2019 - Great to finish a night of with a perfect bottle of Chateau Margaux. 1986 vintage is a bit controversial and this Margaux is no different. Often still very closed or with lots of not-yet-integrated tannins, our bottle told a different story: fully mature with full power tertiary aromatics, completely mellowed structure, no hard edges, just Margaux elegance in the best possible way. Easily WOTN. 97 points. What might have helped here. The wine has not been stored in temperature and humidity controlled cellar in the past roughly 10 years (slightly too warm, slightly too volatile), so this bottle is probably more advanced and more ready than the average perfectly stored bottle.

TN: Full-throttle tertiary aromatics with loads of black truffles, wet forest floor, tobacco, used leather, some sous bois, plenty of dark fruit showing, some floral hints, some minerality. Good precision and very intense aromas on the nose and palate. Mellowed but still well holding up tannin structure, excellent level of well-integrated acidity, good balance and length.

Decanting: Judging from other experiences with the 1986 and other notes here, my bottle was not representative. It didn't need any decanting and was singing. Others might need a long decant.

April 21, 2019 - Opened 2 bottles for one dinner and both were great. Full of fruit, sweet tannin, deep secondary flavors and tons of life. Really great showing for 30 plus year old wines.

(Chateau Margaux Margaux) A remarkable colour here, this wine is not hugely concentrated but has a fine, claretty hue. The nose is firm and rather sooty, a characteristic I have noted before in many other wines of the 1986 vintage, and have come to associate with the tannins in these wines. Otherwise there are some appealing, minerally notes. Sweetly elegant on entry, with a beautiful, light-footed dance across the midpalate. This is remarkable. Only at this point to the tannins that come with this vintage make an entrance, but they are still coated with plenty of fruit and a worth y texture. Not as evolved as the 1989, or even the 1988, and will benefit, like those, from more time in the cellar. One can only hope those tannins will fade.
