October 2, 2022 - The first pour was blind next to the 1982 Latour, which this bested. Initially closed but with air opened to an ethereal experience with everything in balance. Light fruit, more leather than the Latour, Cambodian kampot pepper, green pepper, hints of black cherry. When paired with the gouda cheese it took on an interesting umami taste not unlike sashimi. Super refined and not a hair out of place. Textbook aged left bank Bordeaux. 98-99/100.

    October 1, 2022 - 1982 Chateau Mouton Rothschild.

Bottle purchased at action, excellent condition.
Neck filled, minor label nicks, but excellent condition.

Cork pulled out clean; browned with a blackened end against the wine.

Color - still vivacious, basically a deep garnet with light bricking.

Nose - ripened fruit, blueberry and red currant with complex secondary spices.

Taste - harmonious blend with ripened cherry, red currant, toast, secondary caramel, uname, light saline. Taste lasts on the tongue a good 60 seconds. Acidity balanced and tannins wound down.

It earns it's reputation. Fantastic wine.

September 23, 2022 - A perfectly conditioned bottle brought to dinner by a friend with a great cellar purchased long ago. Not a blow me away wine but one that grew on me so much sip after sip. It's such a classic Pauillac with great depth of dark fruits, graphite minerals, peanut brittle and the most gorgeous silky texture. The thing that got me was the balance of this wine - literally everything is in the right place and there are no flaws! It's layered in such a perfect way and the finish is so satisfyingly complex that I was mesmerized. Even the great '86 drunk alongside showed some flaws only in light of the comparison. A perfect wine in every way if you get the right bottle.

September 15, 2022 - Slow ox for 3 hours, decanted for 1, and drank over 3.

What a special bottle. Menthol, mint, tobacco, fruit, earth, lead, cedar. So much complexity. Balanced with resolved tannins and delicious acidity. A very elegant wine. The finish lasted for 30-45 seconds. Surprisingly alive for 40 years old.

    Just incredible.

August 22, 2022 - Stood up for about 6 hours. Decanted for about an hour. Drank over 3 hours.

Fairly dusty under the capsule. Cork was not saturated, but the bottom 1/3 broke off as I was extracting. But re-engaged and the bottom 1/3 came right out.

Was somewhat surprised at the limited amount of sediment in the bottle. Certainly some; just not as much as I was expecting.

Color is just stunning for a wine of this age; showing very little fading on the edges. I would not have guess this wine was 40 years old based on the color.

Nose is the best part to me. So intriguing, with secondary and tertiary notes abounding. Mint. Moist tobacco. Pencil shavings. I could sniff this all night and still find something different to enjoy.

Mid-weight on the palate, with great balance and still the secondary flavors shining; fruit of red and black but not in abundance.

Finish was smooth and solid, but not long or lingering for me. I'm no expert on tasting wines of this age, but the finish length would be my only critique on this beautiful wine.

I think it showed a little bit more between hour 1 and hour 2, but really no movement between hour 2 and hour 3. Overall probably at peak for me . . . if I did have another bottle, would open within 5 years.

A smashing way to cap off a 40th birthday.
