August 26, 2019 - Corked. Palmer perfume almost overcame the TCA odor. Palate was clearly flawed.

August 3, 2019 - 9th of 12, decanted 80 minutes, perfect cork and level, again wonderful and little changed from bottle noted in detail in June 16, 20 years plus life and stuffing to improve further. VF+ (19).

July 28, 2019 - Jordan's 1989 Bordeaux Dinner (Feast & Imbibe - Evanston IL): Opened and decanted at 3pm, returned to bottle at 3:30, then served around 7:15. While the Margaux was bigger and more fleshy, this showed such an array a complexity. Black cherry, cassis, plum, cassis, sweet and savory spice with tobacco and mushroom in such a complex combination. Truly wonderful balance in a seamless package with very good+ length. Probably my favorite of the flight, in a truly great flight.

July 26, 2019 - The first bottle of my last case of the magnificent 89 Palmer. It has always been one of my favourite vintage. Sweet plummy fruit, dark chocolate, tobacco, licorice, and toasty oak. There is plenty of depth in the palate and while fully mature, it is brilliantly balanced. Fine, precise tannins. The 89 is still singing in the glass and has more years ahead.

July 14, 2019 - Longtime chasing this and finally got it in perfect condition. This is amazing. The length and finesse it displays are just so archetypal Margaux. Not instantly accessible, but goodness is this a fine tuned orchestra of taste balance, all within minerality, structure, subtle tannins and an admirable low toned primary notes of flowers and gentle white fruits. Just a true pleasure.

(Chateau Palmer (Margaux)) And now a chance to revisit the '89 Palmer - although I confess it is a decade since I last tasted it! Poured from a magnum. An appealing, light and delicate perfume here, sweet smoke intermingled with notes of violets and thyme. It is remarkable how all three clarets poured here (Mouton, Palmer, Montrose) just don't seem fully mature yet. Supple and well defined on entry, then relaxing in the midpalate where it has a reserved and dry texture, although still with a broad presence of flavour. Savoury and lightly spiced. Stylish composition, very long, full of promise, but for my palate it still has more in the bank to give.

(Chateau Palmer Margaux) The assemblage is Cabernet Sauvignon 52%, Merlot 41%, Petit Verdot 6% and Cabernet Franc just 1%. We have clearly taken a step up in quality here. A lovely colour. A wonderful, complex and fragrant nose, with hints of fresh coffee grounds. The forepalate is rich, round and full, and although this sensation persists the midpalate is dominated by the tannins which give this wine such structure. Lots of fat, ripe fruit, yet quite elegant and perfumed with it. The tannins persist after the finish. A great wine. Needs five years at least.
