August 6, 2023 - I should have given this more air, or 1-2 more years in the bottle. A glass left for day 2 was the best. Bright cherries and plums form the core of this rich, deep Napa merlot, finishes with Christmas spice and mineral notes. Sugarloaf is a cooler site, far south in the valley. Both Venge and B cellars make a delicious version

June 1, 2023 - I had the opportunity to taste the new Suagrloaf merlot at Venge Vineyards, which is being bottled as a single vineyard wine both for this label and for B cellars. This is the first Venge version, I believe. Kirk does a great job with this varietal, which drinks like a big, bold valley Cabernet. Ripe plums on the nose, followed by rich, dense, blue and black fruits- blackberries, ripe dark cherries, spice, oak wrapped by fine grained tannins. Rich, balanced, plush and satisfying. I would give it an hour of air.
