Community Tasting Notes 31

April 8, 2024 - Beautiful crimson color, with just a little bricking at the edge. Terrific and expressive nose right out of the gate, with bright red fruits, earth, roses, and violets. Notes carry through on the palate with a great core of sweet fruit framed with more savory notes. Tannins are approachable now, but this is in no danger of fading soon. Finishes long, with earthy notes. Lovely wine.

August 23, 2023 - No formal notes. Very good indeed and has lots more life in it

March 13, 2023 - Dark and savory in early drinking window. Drank over 3 days from Coravin and it stayed the same over that time. I'd hold for at least 5 more years.

January 7, 2023 - Drank together with 2004 Vietti Castiglione Henry’s. Decanted for almost an hour while we drank our white wine and then drank it over an hour or so. This wine wears its pedigree well. The nose offers bright dark red fruit, forest notes, tar and the classic roses at the end. The nose opened more and more as the night went on. The palate offered the same flavours with ripe fine tannins, quite angular to start with and filled in over the two hours to become completely balanced and mouth coating. Very long finish. This is just getting into the drinking window and certainly benefitted from the one hour decant.

August 30, 2022 - Decanted one hour - likely not nearly enough. Quite a full red for nebbiolo. This is very Serralunga, and I daresay very Lazzarito, but I don’t know the vineyard well enough to say. On the palate dark red cherry fruit - slightly mysterious - lots of tar and balsamic with perhaps some thyme on the back end. Nothing pretty or charming about this. Beautiful measured ripeness to the fruit but housed in a still quite lean and unforgiving profile. Some oak still, which amplifies the wine’s sweetness and silkiness on the palate. Grippy, drying and very assertive tannins set up residence on the gums. The wine has a much stronger presence on the front end than the back, which I found lacking length. Too much oak in evidence at this stage for my taste, but this wine is only starting to unfold on what will be a long journey. Barely ready. I noticed the oak more by the second glass, as I am inclined to do, by which time the nose was expressing more violet/floral notes. Taking no prisoners today. Young for 18 years, reflecting its Serralunga heritage. Though I find it modern in style, I cannot deny this wine speaks strongly of where it came from and for that reason is among the most worthy Vietti I have drunk for some time. Bought on release. Wait ten more years or decant at least six hours.

Next day. Tannins better mannered. Validates the need to decant. It is too modern for me, but still reminds me how unique and fabulous Barolo with some age can be.
