March 3, 2021 - Graet length. Young and primary but good balance.
February 15, 2021 - blind
I guessed Margaux 1983. Close to perfection. Still young but in a phantastique drinking window. Mix of primary and secondary notes and a bit of tertiara aromas. At least 20 more years. 99+
October 24, 2020 - World Series Mondo Wine Event (Duluth, GA): Tasted blind. Could it be the order in which it was served immediately following the '82 Pichon Lalande or that it just wasn't the best showing of this legendary wine? I'm not sure which, but it lacked a soul during this tasting event. I was all over the place with my tasting notes. At first calling it a left bank Bordeaux, but then ending up in Bolgheri with either a Solaia or Sassicaia. Boy was I wrong. I was also not alone in my assessment as the group was confused by this wine as it did not scream where it was from in a blind format.
August 22, 2020 - Widely considered (by me) to be the wine of the vintage in 1990, this definitely didn’t disappoint showing that incredible violet velvet robe of a great Margaux. Tremendous depth and sneaky power, this still keeps to the feminine side of Margaux showing a purity of perfume and texture to die for. The only surprise of the night was how well the next two wines ('90 Lafite & Latour) competed with this.
August 13, 2020 - A small gathering at Jailbreak Brewing Co. (Jailbreak Brewery, Laurel, MD): Expressive nose displaying intense ripe black fruit, blackberry liqueur, crème de cassis, blueberry pie, caramel, lactic, ink, lead pencil and earth. Justin finds the green note a bit bothersome. Exceptional concentration, layers upon layers of intense black fruit, unctuous, rich and silky, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, nicely masked tannins due to the concentrated fruit, and a long intense black fruit driven finish with caramel and ink at the end. RJ finds it not as enjoyable compared to a few years ago. It is morphing into the next stage of development, i.e. slowly becoming like the 82 but not showing enough tertiary notes to compensate the loss of intensity and expressiveness. I firmly believe this will become perfect again in a few years.
August 8, 2020 - Beautiful. Deep plum, nice oak, almost smoky at the start (which passed with breathing). Rich, smooth. Earthy nose.
July 25, 2020 - This was disappointing and showed very young. Rather muted, not much expression just hinting at what could be. I‘ve tasted it right after opening and before decanting, at 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours and then over several hours as well as the next day, nothing changed much. I don‘t really think it was a bad bottle just too young, respectively in an awkward phase. If I would have to score this wine today, it would have been a solid 92/93 experience, not much more.
June 14, 2020 - What Dream said. Except I thought the tannins were seamless and well integrated. It probably is not the best Bordeaux I’ve ever tasted. After drinking over a thousand, I just can’t remember one better. Magnificent.
June 10, 2020 - This is an extraordinary wine that’s still young and fairly tannic but its so gorgeous that it’s impossible to resist. Deep flavors of cassis and blackberry glide in layers over the palate and the texture is opulent and velvety. The finish is deeply concentrated with incredible notes of violet spice, floral earth and sweet gravel. Stunning and only going up from here. 97+
May 30, 2020 - Red fruit, burnt sugar, tobacco, würzig, floral. Sehr sehr interessant. Very soft tanins. Had it at the end of a long night, hence the short description.
